ELIZABETH NELL DIXON COVIL

SANFORD — Mrs. Elizabeth Nell Dixon Covil, age 77, of Sanford, N.C., died Monday, October 28, 2013 at Parkview Retirement Center surrounded by her family.

She was born in Onslow County, NC on September 19, 1936 to the late Odie Bishop Dixon and Emma Elizabeth Marshburn Dixon. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Leo and Carl Dixon. Mrs. Covil was a homemaker and avid gardener. She was a woman of strong faith who taught Sunday school to young children for many years and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church.

Mrs. Covil is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert Clarence Covil; two sons, Eddy Covil and wife Frieda of Red Springs, N.C. and Wayne Covil and wife Pam of Colonial Heights, Va.; one daughter, Debbie C. McFarland and husband Richard of Deep River; one brother, Ronald J. Dixon and wife Delora of Jacksonville, N.C.; one sister, Sadie Newman and husband Dave of California; four grandchildren, Daniel McFarland and wife Kalah of Sanford and their daughter Allie; Christopher Boyd and wife Ashley of Virginia and their son Cody, Michael Boyd and wife Lana of Henderson and their children Nathaniel, Savannah and Logan, Nikki Locklear and husband Kelly of Wagram and their children Hannah, Kross and Jase.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the atrium of Flat Springs Baptist Church and the funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary with Dr. Gary McCollough and the Rev. Randy Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

HARRY HUBERT BOTTGER

LILLINGTON — Funeral service for Harry Hubert Bottger, 80, who Saturday (10/26/13) at Duke University Hospital, was held Sunday at Cape Fear Church of Christ.

He was born in The Netherlands, and was retired U.S. Air Force. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Wanda Newton.

He is survived by his wife, Anita Bottger; daughters, Sheryl Dixon and Amy Houghtaling; sons, Robert Bottger and Bill Gibson; 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

A.C. CHILDRESS

SANFORD — Funeral service for A.C. Childress, 73, who died Friday (10/25/13), was held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Lemon Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Andy Foley and the Rev. Wayne O'Quinn officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Lisa Black. Soloist was Lynda Matthews. Recorded music was played and the congregation sang two selections. A trio consisting of Mark Smith on the guitar, Chad Martindale on the banjo, and Donnie Martindale on the guitar sang at the graveside.

Pallbearers were Joshua Davis, Zachery Doby, Brandon Ross, Eli Ryser, Clint Sloan, Cody Sloan, Nic Stott and Joshua Womble. Classmates sat together as a group.

CAMERON — Tony Jones died Sunday (10/27/13) at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home.

JERRY GLENN HAMILTON

LILLINGTON — Jerry Glenn “Pete” Hamilton, 71, died Monday (10/28/13) at his home.

He was born in Harnett County, son of the late William Harry and Eunice Fore Hamilton. He was a general contractor for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judy Hamilton Johnson West, and brother Franklin Delano Hamilton.

Graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westview Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Bill Goodnight officiating.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margie Yow Hamilton; two sons, Jerry Glenn Hamilton Jr. and wife Karen, and Martin Bruce Hamilton; one daughter, Bridget Hamilton Larson and husband David, all of Lillington; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

DURHAM — Larry Arthur Gunter, 65, formerly of Sanford, died Sunday (10/27/13) in Wilmington.

He was born in Lee County on Feb. 23, 1948, to Alberta Lassiter Gunter and to the late Jake Gunter. He ran Central Carolina Amusements.

He is survived by his mother, Alberta Lassiter Gunter; a daughter, Tiffany Gunter; two stepchildren, Brian Fowler of Durham and Brooke Pearce of Carolina Beach; a brother, Darrell L. Gunter of Sanford; and by a fiancée, Jeanne G. Ritchey of Durham.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Turner's Chapel Fellowship Hall (one hour prior to the graveside service). The graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Turner's Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce MacInnes officiating.

GERTHA LANE JOYCE

SILER CITY — Gertha Lane Joyce, 87, of Bonlee-Bennett Road, died Monday (10/28/13) at Manor Care Health Services in Pinehurst.

She was born  Dec. 22, 1925 in Lee County, the daughter of William Henry and Blanche (Hilliard) Lane. She was a homemaker and member of Edward Hill Friends Meeting, the Senior Sunday School class and sang in the choir. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter Odell Joyce, son Jerry Mack Joyce, sister Eunice White and son-in-law Benny Craven.

She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Joyce Craven of Sumter, S.C., and Sandy Joyce Merritt and husband Robert of Elizabethtown; two sons, Rodger Joyce and wife Jill of Greensboro, and Ronald O. Joyce and wife Shelly of Bear Creek; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Ronnie Joyce, 145 CC Routh Road, Bear Creek.

LOUVENE WILLIAMSON MANESS

BENNETT — Louvene Williamson Maness, 88, of 240 N.C.Hwy. 22, died Sunday (10/27/13) at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel with the Rev. Joey Greene officiating. Burial will follow at High Falls Wesleyan Church Cemetery following the chapel service.

She was a Moore County native, and was the daughter of the late John T. and Sarah K. Williamson. She had worked as a textile worker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Victor Maness, four sisters and five brothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Elaine M. Jones and husband Doyle of Bear Creek; two granddaughters and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joyce-Brady Chapel in Bennett, and other times at the home of her granddaughter Dana.

CAMERON — Charles E. “Eddie” Loving, 65, died Sunday (10/27/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cameron Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Craines Creek Cemetery.

Born in Richmond County to the late Frank Jones Loving and Jessie Thomas Loving, he spent most of his life in Cameron. He graduated from Union Pines High School and N.C. State University. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Bowman Loving, and a brother, Richard Loving.

He is survived by daughters, Beth Elliott and husband Brent of Siler City and Jessica Gozy and husband Jarrod of Clarksville, Tenn.; brother, Tommy Loving and wife Judy of Cameron; sister, Mary Lou Yow and husband Tony of Sanford; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Cameron Baptist Church fellowship hall today from 6 to 8 p.m. and other times at the residence.
