CAMERON — Jesse Lee Knox Sr., 76, of Cameron died Wednesday (8/13/14) at his home.

He was born in Martin County on June 19, 1938 to the late Grover Lee Knox Sr. and Gladys Mae Stalls Knox. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by sisters, Jeanette Warren and Brenda Ann Ruffin; and brothers, Elmer Lee Knox and James Randolph Knox. He was a radiator mechanic.

He is survived by his wife, Janie Marie Knox; three sons, Jesse Joseph Knox and wife Wendy of Burgaw, Jesse Lee Knox Jr. and wife Kim of Willard, and David Lee Knox and fiancé Kayla Lewis of Currie; three daughters, Rosa Lee Talbert and fiancé Rodney Garner of Cameron, Peggy Lee Knox of Wilmington, and Linda Kay Scott and husband Ray of Greenville; brother, Grover Lee Knox Jr. and wife Janice of Tarboro; sister, Reather Mae Bryant of Tarboro; 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Pastor Jay Young and Pastor Wayne Lamb officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at the funeral home.

DUBLIN, Va. — Rev. Howard Grayson McNeill of Dublin, Va., died Wednesday (8/13/14) in Dublin.

Born in Moore County on Aug. 25, 1938, he graduated from Cameron High School in 1956. He attended Washington Bible College in Washington, D.C., and graduated in 1960 with a B.A. in Biblical Education. He then attended Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Ind. He pastored churches in Indiana, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. He was a member of Auburn Baptist Church in Riner, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny David McNeill and Rosie Dinkins McNeill; and two brothers, Johnny Allen McNeill and Samuel Eugene McNeill.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Laura Dawson McNeill; three children, Rev. David Grayson McNeill and wife Kristi of Roanoke, Va., Robin Dunavant and husband Doug of Dublin, Va., and Daniel Hugh McNeill and wife Paula of Covington, Ky.; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and siblings, Ozell McNeill Sharp and husband Joseph of Sanford, Melvin McNeill and wife Marcia of Bakersville, and Nevie T. McNeill and wife Charlene of Sanford.

BROADWAY — David Joseph “Rabbit” Heron, 55, of Broadway, died Thursday (8/14/14) at First Health Hospice Center in Pinehurst. Arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Smith Funeral Home of Broadway.


SANFORD — Funeral service for Shelby Jean McLeod, 75, of Sanford, who died Monday (8/11/14), was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jonesboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hunter Preston and the Rev. Doug Houston officiating. Burial followed at the Mount Pisgah Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

During the service, Dr. Daniel Hester was the organist. The congregation and the church choir sang.

Pallbearers were Craig McKeithan, Jimmy Harrington, Wayne Morgan, Greg Kelly, Chris Rhodes and Rex McArthur.

Honorary pallbearers were Tillman Howard and Reid Craig.
