SANFORD — Joseph Roger Bowden, 95, of Sanford, died Friday, April 12, 2013, at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation on Farrell Road.

Mr. Bowden was born in Harnett County to the late Keet Bowden and Lonnie Wiggins Bowden. He was a retired farmer and served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in Caledonia Island, Australia, Luzon, Philippines and New Guinea. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Frances Turlington Bowden; sisters Gladys Dupree and Mary Norton; and brothers, Thurman Bowden, Herman Bowden and Billy Ray Bowden.

Surviving relatives include his daughter, Susan Kay Bowden Byerly of Sanford; brother Rev. James Bowden of Sanford; sisters Frances Matthews of Coats, Peggy Stone of TN, Judy Graham of Sanford and Mildred Lockamy of Broadway; three grandchildren, Kirk Byerly of Raleigh, Mark Byerly of Virginia Beach and Kim Byerly McGovern of Yorktown, Va.; and several great grandchildren.

A family graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2013 at Erwin Chapel Church Cemetery, with Rev. James Bowden presiding and a eulogy by Capt. Jim McGovern, USN. No visitation at the funeral home.

SANFORD — Memorial service for Karen Anne Williams Leonard, 61, who died Sunday (4/7/13) was conducted 4 p.m. Friday (4/12/13) in the Chapel of Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home with Minister Creable Bland presiding.

Recorded music played. A eulogy was given by her daughter Kenna Leonard Wilson, and a poem was read by daughters Kara Leonard Lee and Emily Leonard Hudnall. Other members of the congregation gave remembrances.

LILLINGTON — Ruby Mae Long, 88, of Lillington, died Friday (4/12/13) at Green Leaf Care Center in Lillington. A native of Harnett County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Lina Johnson Wilder and was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Tom Long. Mrs. Long was the church organist at the Lillington Baptist Church for 63 years.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday (4/16/13) at the Lillington Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Smith officiating. Burial will be in Harnett Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home, other times at the home of Terry and Ruby Jo Manahan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lillington Baptist Church Playground Fund, PO Box 670, Lillington, NC  27546 or to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Mrs. Long is survived by her son Ernest Long, of Lillington; daughter Ruby Jo Manahan (Terry), of Lillington; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

MONCURE — Arthur Smith, 59, of Moncure, died Sunday (4/7/13) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday (4/15/13) at Knotts Funeral Home, 50 Masonic Street, Pittsboro, N.C.

He is survived by his wife Dannette T. Smith; two sisters, Carlene Lundy (Tony) and Darlene Smith (Willard); four brothers, Carlton Smith (Kay), Greg Smith, Quinton Smith (Sarah), and Calvin Smith, six aunts, three uncles and a host of neices, nephews, relatives, and friends.

CHAPEL HILL — John Baldwin, 95, of 1314 White Cross Road, Chapel Hill, NC passed Thursday, April 11, 2013 at his residence.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mrs. Yvonne E. Baldwin of the home, two daughters Ms. Jean Baldwin and Ms. Cynthia Lambert, one son Terry Baldwin; two special nephews; two adopted grandaughters; and a host of nieces, nephews, others relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Monday (4/15/13) at Terrell's Chapel AME Zion Church, Pittsboro, N.C. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

SANFORD — Patrick Petty Jr., of 33A Kenwood Terrace, Sanford, died Wednesday (4/10/13) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

He is survived by his parents Ladora and Patrick Petty, of Sanford; one brother, G’Brien Petty; two sisters, G’Miya Petty and Hannah Petty of Sanford; two grandmothers, Deloris Ellerby & Ethel Petty of Sanford; four uncles and a host of cousins.

Graveside Service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday (4/16/13) at Lee Memory Garden in Sanford.

MONCURE — Mae Crutchfield Poe, 99, of 154 Lions Club Road, died Tuesday (4/9/13) at her home.

Funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday (4/12/13) at the Haywood Independent Bible Church with the Rev. Terry Pleasant and the Rev. Ray Gooch Officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbrearers were David Oldham, Danny Oldham, Scott Oldham, Pete Tingen, Von Tingen, Kelly Jones, Kolt Jones, and Cory Roberson. Pianist was Charlotte Walton. Singers were Charlotte Walton, Scott Oldham, Camp Oldham and Diane Bennett.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Pauline Bowser Simmons, 79, of Sanford, who died Sunday (4/7/13) was held at 2 p.m. Thursday (4/11/13) at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel in Sanford. Burial followed at Lee Memory Garden.

Pastor T.L. Brower officiated. Frederick Berryman was a musician, and soloist was Catina Thomas. Pallbearers were friends of the family.

BROADWAY — Funeral service for Jerry Murchison, 86, of Broadway, who died Wednesday (4/10/13) was held 11 a.m. Saturday (4/13/13) at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel in Sanford. Burial followed in the Sandhills Veterans Cemetary in Spring Lake.

Pastor Harrison Ray officiated and gave a eulogy. Musician was Frederick Berryman, and soloist was Sis Ella Lee.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Lillian Jones, 96, of Sanford, who died Sunday (4/7/13) was held 1 p.m. Saturday (4/13/13) at Macedonia AME Zion Church in Gulf. Burial followed at the church.

Rev. Carolyn Ratcliff officiated. Musicians were the Macedonia Choir, and soloist was the Rev. Iris Jordan. Pallbearers were Jones's grandsons and great-grandsons.
