NANCY GAIL DOWDY DEAL

SANFORD — Nancy Gail Dowdy Deal, age 66, of Sanford, N.C., died Wednesday, February, 27, 2013 at her home.

She was born in Lee County, N.C. on February 15, 1947, to the late Shelton Monroe Dowdy and Christine McDonald Dowdy. Nancy worked for Canteen at Coty.

She is survived by two sons, Billy “Scooter” Deal Jr. and wife Riana of Surf City, Chad Deal and wife Sherry of Sanford; one daughter, Crystal Deal White and husband Jean of Troutman; one sister, Ann Dowdy Keck of Reidsville; and five grandchildren, Joshua White, Christine White, Abrielle Deal, Erick Deal and Andrew Deal. She is also survived by her loving companion, Chuck Grant.

The family will receive friends Friday, March 1, 2013 at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m. The funeral service will be Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Edgewood Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Hayes presiding. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

JOSEPH LEO SILVIS

CARTHAGE — Joseph Leo Silvis, 84, of Sanford, NC was received by the Lord on Wednesday February 27, 2013 at Tara Plantation Nursing Home in Carthage.

Mr. Silvis was born January 29, 1929 in New York to the late Arthur Silvis and Lena (Woefel) Silvis.

A visitation will be held at the Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday March 2, 2013 with funeral service starting at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Raymond D. Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Memory Gardens in Sanford.

Mr. Silvis was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a devoted father, husband and Christian who loved life and gardening. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage.

Mr. Silvis was preceded in death by his wife in 2004 of forty-eight years, Jean Silvis. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Silvis, Arthur Silvis and James Silvis; and three sisters, Freda Fox, Rose Taylor and Alice Benamin.

He is survived by a son, David Silvis and wife Lisa and their son, Dylan Silvis, of Coram, N.Y.; a daughter, Renay J. Wulpern and husband Richard of Sanford, N.C.

RACHEL MAY MOODY

SILER CITY — Rachel May Moody, 62, of Moody Loop Road, died Wednesday (2/27/13) at Siler City Care & Rehabilitation.

She was born in Alamance County on Oct. 5, 1950, the daughter of Charlie J. and Martha Angie (Phillips) Moody. She was a homemaker and attended Rives Chapel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Henry Moody; and her stepmother, Sarah Walton Moody.

She is survived by one sister, Linda M. Macon and husband James of Seagrove; brother, Charles Moody Sr. and wife Mary Gail of Victoria, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 until 3 p.m. at Rives Chapel Baptist Church in Siler City, and other times at the home of Cat and Chuck Moody, 713 North Third Ave, Siler City.

Funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at Rives Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Browder and Darrin Locklear officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

JEANNE ZEMEK BOHN

WHISPERING PINES — Jeanne Zemek Bohn, 84, died Monday (2/25/13) at her home.

She was born in Chicago, Ill., on Nov. 23, 1928, to Arthur and Ester Kettleson Zemek. She was Director of Communications for WSOC-TV for over 20 years.

She is survived by two children, Sara Jeanne Bohn Looman and husband John of Georgia, and Nathan Paul Bohn and wife Jane Adams of Pennsylvania; one sister, Barbara Buedel of Arizona; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Ester Kettleson Zemek; her husband, Ralph Paul Bohn PhD; and one brother, Thomas Zemek.

CARTHAGE — Thomas Edward Cook, 78, died Wednesday (2/27/13) at Pinelake Health and Rehab in Carthage.

Graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Eugene Ussery and Pastor David Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Emmanuel Baptist Church and other times at the home of Judy Collins, 1050 Ring Road, Carthage.

He was born in Long Hill on Dec. 5, 1934, to Howard Taft and Mallie Taylor Cook. He farmed most of his life. He was preceded In death by his parents, Howard Taft and Mallie Taylor Cook; two sisters, Irene Collier and Nancy Cline; and two brothers, Jimmy Cook and Allen Cook.

He is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Garcia of Florida; two sisters, Judy Collins and husband Wade, and Annie Frye, all of Carthage; one brother, Curtis Cook and wife Susan of Carthage; one sister-in-law, Marie Cook of Carthage; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

OLYMPIA SABATINO

CARTHAGE — Olympia Sabatino, 85, died Tuesday (2/26/13) at Peak Resources - Pinelake in Carthage.

Funeral service will be  conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Carthage First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Campbell officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines.

Born in Bridgeport, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Stephen Tegulias and Mary Cataman Tegulias. She grew up in Trumbell, Conn., and worked as a secretary at Dictaphone Corp in Bridgeport, Conn., until she retired in 1960. Her family moved to Carthage in November 2001.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John Sabatino; and a daughter, Doreen Carr of Carthage.

SANFORD — Terri Sue Hall, 58, died Wednesday (2/27/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

She was born Feb. 8, 1955, in St. Louis, Mo., to the late Raymond Bouquet and Connie (Davenport) Bouquet.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home with the Pastor George Akers officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.

GORDON R. HIGGINS

ELYRIA, Ohio — Gordon R. Higgins, 89, of LaGrange, died Saturday (2/23/13) at Keystone Pointe in LaGrange.

He was born April 20, 1923, in Elyria. He was the owner of the former Higgins Electric Company. He was a member of the Washington Avenue Christian Church in Elyria and served in the U.S. Navy during W.W. II. Following his retirement, he lived in Sanford for 25 years.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Shirley (nee-Latterner); daughters, Patricia (Thomas) Spruill of Columbia, Stephanie (Don) Novak of Elyria, and Rae Ann (Travis) Womble of Sanford; sons, Gerald (Debra) Higgins of Grafton and Joseph (Tamera) Higgins of DuPont, Ohio; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Darlene Henes of Elyria.

The family will receive friends today from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at 7 p.m. at the Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Elyria with the Rev. Dr. Janet Long officiating. A private burial will be at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria.

CLAYTON — Louise Bunn Wilkie, 92, died Wednesday (2/27/13).

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Bear Creek officiated by Pastor Eddie White.

She was born April 17, 1920, in Edgecombe County to the late Fred and Mary Vines Bunn. She was a retired home economics and science teacher with Wayne County Schools and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Broughton Wilkie; and brothers, Fred Bunn Jr. and Joe Bunn.

She is survived by one son, Bruce (Pam) of Clayton; daughter, Linda Langley of Greenville; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service at Bear Creek Baptist Church.

JUDITH GAIL DAVIS ACKERMAN

SANFORD — Judith Gail Davis Ackerman, 71, died Wednesday (2/27/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born in Whitesville, W.Va., daughter of the late Robert Willis Davis and Laura Alice Hensley Davis. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Jo Frances Davis Belcher, Delores Ann Davis Sketcher, James Earl Davis and Jerry Nelson Davis. She was a graduate of Big Creek High School in War, W.Va., and retired from Bell Telephone. She completed college courses at the University of Maryland, Rutgers University and Central Carolina Community.

She is survived by her husband, Oscar Ackerman of St. Hilary, Wales; daughter, Roberta Lynn Dougherty of Hamden, Conn.; sisters, Alice Linda Davis Beardslee of Broadway and Bobbie Jean Davis Propst of Vermillion, Ohio; brothers, Milford Keith Davis of Macon, Ga., Henry Thomas Davis of Sanford and Curtis Lynn Davis of Citrus Springs, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be no services held.

She was a chef for many years at Checkered Flag Restaurant in Sanford until it closed. She was the daughter of the late Paul and LeAnna Douglas.

She is survived by one son, Kenneth McKoy (Kimberly); three daughters, Gloria Streeter (Avon), Sarah McKoy (Byron) and Sharon McKoy (Eddie), all of Sanford; three sisters, Emma Sanders, Frances Simms and Jeanette Douglas; two brothers, Josephus Douglas (Annie Mae) and Chester Douglas; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; special friend, Elijah Williams; sister-in-law, Annie Jane McKoy; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
