SANFORD — Funeral service for Mary Ellen Gurley Dowdy, 86, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Sanford, who died Sunday (4/6/14), was held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Turner's Chapel Church with the Rev. Milton Wilder and Dr. Gary McCollough officiating.

Pianist was Leonard Harris. Shatauka Hall and Beth Kelly sang a duet and Shatauka Hall was also a soloist. Great-granddaughter Khloe Patton Mohan played a special piece on the piano and granddaughter Holly Cotton Mohan read a poem. Daughters Brenda Cotton and Mary Jon Schmitz did the eulogies. The congregation also sang.

Pallbearers were Phillip Cotton, Patrick Mohan, J.C. Harton, Brayden Cotton, Clay DeMent and Tim McAlexander. Program attendants were great-grandsons, Iain Mohan and Declan Mohan.

Arrangements were by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.


SANFORD — Frances Allen, 90, of 1023 Vance St., Sanford, died Friday (4/11/14) at her residence. Arrangements will be announced by Knotts Funeral Home.


SPRING LAKE — Graveside service for Louis Rogers, 88, of 653 Goodyear Drive, Spring Lake, who died Wednesday (4/2/14), was held Thursday at 12 p.m. at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, with the Rev. Erskin Lowe officiating.

Pallbearers were members of the U.S. Army.

Arrangements were handled by Elizabeth Street Mortuary in Spring Lake.


SANFORD — Magdaline Martin Spivey, 68, of Sanford, died Wednesday (4/9/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She was born in Stokes County, daughter of the late Oliver Martin and Pansy Etta Logan Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Horace Spivey; son, Alan Spivey; and granddaughter, Mandy Spivey.

Graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Buffalo Cemetery with Chaplain Joel Cameron officiating.

She is survived by a daughter, Catherine Gilmore and husband Roger of Olivia; son, Tim Spivey of Sanford; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials are made to the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 370, Broadway, N.C. 27505 for funeral expenses.

SANFORD — Graveside service for Cynthia White Buchanan, 74, of Sanford, who died Sunday (4/6/14), was held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Jonesboro Cemetery with the Rev. Gilbert W. McDowell presiding.

Those attending the graveside service sang. Soloist was the Rev. James Williams.

Pallbearers were Michael Brame, SPC Justin Cole, Craig Oates, Kelly McNeill, Michael White and Jimmy Gaster.

Arrangements were by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.


SANFORD — Funeral service for Vivian Sybil Maddox Fincher, 72, of Sanford, who died Wednesday (4/9/14), was held at 11 a.m. Friday at Grace Chapel Church by Pastor Joel Murr and the Rev. Bob Yandle. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Betty Sue McNeill and soloist was Leslie Hanna. The congregation sang.

Pallbearers were Travis Cole, Larry Collins, Reid Elmore, Larry Jackson, John Kelly and Mark West.

SANFORD — Percy L. “Mickey” Petty Sr., 77, of 1213 Bland Circle, Sanford, died Tuesday (4/8/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He is survived by a daughter, Jackie Petty of Sanford; sons, Percy Petty Jr. (Shelly) of Texas and Chad Gales (Shamekia) of Raleigh; brothers, James Petty (Gaynell) and Sam Petty (Cecelia), all of Sanford; stepsister, Marie Peak; sister-in-law, Joyce Shepherd; father-in-law, Vernon McIver; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tempting Congregational Church.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Watson Memorial-Cunningham & Son’s Mortuary. The family will also be receiving friends at the home of his daughter, Jackie Petty, 1706 Westover Drive.
