MILDRED BRIDGES MCNEILL

SANFORD — Mildred Bridges McNeill, 86, of Sanford passed away Saturday (8/3/13). A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Pocket Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. McNeill was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Arthur and Mollie Bridges; Mildred was very active in her churches: First Baptist Church for many years and then Pocket Presbyterian Church where she was a member of the Berean Sunday School Class and Circle and was the pianist for Pocket’s Sunday School for many years. She loved to play the piano, and the decision was made early in her marriage to get a piano instead of a car. Mildred volunteered with the Salvation Army Store for over 12 years and was an active member of the Woodmen of the World.

Mildred leaves behind Thomas Boyd McNeill, beloved husband of almost 68 years; a son, John T. McNeill and wife Donna; a daughter, Joyce M. Carlough and husband Don; grandsons Jonathan McNeill, Matt Carlough and wife Katie, and Rodney Gaines and wife Amanda; granddaughter Amy G. Willis; seven great-grandchildren; nephew Randy Bridges; and cousins Bill Brewer and Jim Bridges.

Memorial contributions can be made to Liberty Hospice, 1005 Carthage St., Sanford, NC 27330.

The family will greet friends following the funeral service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

RUTH P. COVERT

SANFORD — Ruth P. Covert, 98, died Tuesday (7/30/13) at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation, where she had been a resident for the past 5 years.

She was born Aug. 24, 1914, in Edgecombe County, N.C. and moved to Lee County at an early age with her parents, Henry and Mary Proctor.

She graduated from Moncure High School and attended Sanford Business College.

She was predeceased by her husband, Otis M. Covert in 1980.

She is survived by a son, Edward M. Covert of Fort Defiance, Va.;  two grandchildren, Claudia Covert of Cranston, R.I. and James M. Covert of Charlottesville, Va.; and two great-grandchildren.

Burial plans are incomplete.

MARGARET (PEG) NEW BURTON

SANFORD — Margaret (Peg) New Burton of Carolina Trace in Sanford, N.C. passed away quietly and peacefully at home with her family by her side on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 after a long struggle with cancer.

Born in Canastota, N.Y. on April 22, 1943, the daughter of Margaret and Wesley New (deceased), Margaret was a 1961 graduate of Canastota High School, and a 1964 graduate of Arnot-Ogden School of Nursing in Elmira, N.Y.  She also held a BA degree from Saint Josephs College in Standish, Maine.

Margaret married her high school sweetheart, Fredric Burton II (who survives her) in 1965 and had three children: Christopher Bryan and Matthew David who pre-deceased her, and Elizabeth Cady Burton of Philadelphia.  She was the beloved grandmother of Madison Christine Crozier and was the beloved sister of Judith New, Kathleen Westbrook and husband Perry (deceased), Karen Curtis and husband Robert, Mary New, Nancy New, Thomas New and wife Diane, Donald New and wife Deborah.  She was pre-deceased by her brother, Richard New.  She was the beloved sister-in-law of Stephen Burton and wife Diane, Nancy Burton-Leue and husband Peter, Mary Ricciuti and husband Ralph, and Dorothy Pearman. Margaret is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Margaret worked for more than 40 years as a registered nurse, the majority of the time in Intensive Care and Cardiac Intensive Care units at hospitals in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.  She was an avid gardener and cook as well as an enthusiastic tennis player. 

Committal services will be private.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel in Sanford.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Margaret’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park, Ste. 10, Raleigh, NC  27615.

PINEHURST — Mikaela Thomas, 2, of Raleigh, died Thursday (8/1/13) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday (8/6/13) at 11 a.m. At the Kingdom Hall Of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Southern Pines.

She is survived by her parents, Kristian & Natasha Thomas; maternal grandparents Jerry and Phyllis McMillan; parental grandparents Geraldine & Alonzo Sexton; great-grandmothers Inez Kyle and Berneice Chavis; and great-great-grandmother Mary Dobbins.

SANFORD — Memorial services for Charles Michael “Mike” Thomas, 59, of Sanford, who passed away Saturday (7/27/13) were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke United Methodist Church by Dr. Jeff Clark. A reception followed in the fellowship hall at First Baptist Church.

During the service the congregation sang, special music was by the First Baptist Church Choir, the organist was Dianne Stanley and the eulogy was by Robert Gilleland.

Special words of remembrances were by his wife and daughters.

SOUTHERN PINES — Terry Engle, of Southern Pines, died Saturday (7/27/13) at the FirstHealth Hospice house in Pinehurst.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday (8/5/13) in the chapel of Pugh & Smith Funeral Home.

Survivors include his father, Joseph Engle; sons Carlos, Cory, Martin and Samuel Engle; brothers, Levon, James and Victor; sisters, Linda, Priscilla, Wincey and Rose; and one grandson.

LEONA BULLARD PATTERSON

CARTHAGE — Leona Bullard Patterson, 73, of Carthage, died Saturday (8/3/13) at Duke Raleigh Hospital.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Carthage conducted by the Rev. Rick Martindale and the Rev. David Yarbarough. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born Aug. 21, 1939, in Harnett County, she was a daughter of the late James H. and Myrtie Holder Bullard. Leona graduated from East Carolina University and was a retired school teacher for Moore County Schools.

She was preceded in death by her brother James “Buddy” Bullard.

Leona is survived by her husband of 49 years, Otis R. Patterson; daughter Rayona P. Cash and husband Charles of Carthage; son John Patterson and wife Georgia Lee Hamilton Patterson of Lillington; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall on Sunday from 5-8 p.m. and other times at the home.

NELLIE MAE UNDERWOOD HOLDER

SANFORD — Funeral service for Nellie Mae Underwood Holder, 71, of Sanford, who died Thursday (8/1/13) was held Saturday (8/3/13) at 2 p.m. at Calvary Missionary Methodist Church with Pastor Curtis Norris and Rev. Steve Morrow officiating. Special remarks were given by family members. Burial followed at the church cemetery.

Pianist was Joyce Holder. Glory Bound Way sang three selections. Soloist was Rev. Curtis Norris. The congregation also sang.

Pallbearers were James Hall, Dennis Miller, Randall Marion, Chris Burris, Chad Thomas and Harvey Jessup.
