SANFORD — Roy Evans Mashburn, Sr., age 78, of 3614 Wicker St. Ext. died Thursday, August 15, 2013 at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 19, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford with Dr. Rudy Holland officiating. Entombment will follow at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Miller-Boles Funeral Home in Sanford.

Roy was born in Chatham County, N.C. on April 26, 1935, to the late Charles Milton Mashburn and Gertrude Melton Mashburn. He was preceded in death by sisters, Opal Dean and Wilma Martindale.

He is survived by a daughter, Connie S. Mashburn of Greensboro, N.C. and a son, Roy Evans Mashburn Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., with grandchildren, Callie Evans Mashburn and Samuel Walker Mashburn also of Raleigh, N.C.; a niece, Janet Kuykendall of Alamance County, N.C.; nephew, Douglas Martindale of Sanford, N.C., and a special uncle, Woodrow Mashburn along with many friends and relatives.

Marie Wheeler was a dear friend who faithfully worked with Roy for more than 35 years. Peggy Sprouse was Roy's best friend for more than 30 years. Cindy Rannells was his special friend for more than 20 years.

During Roy's life he was an automobile distributor and an independent gasoline distributor in several counties. Roy was a Texaco distributor in Lee County and later a Texaco distributor in Cumberland County. Also, Roy was an investor and commercial land developer. He was a silent philanthropist who was known to be politically active. Roy was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a graduate of Campbell University, and a member of the Carbonton United Methodist Church.

LUCAMA — Sara Van De Grift Strickland, 79, of Lucama passed away Friday (8/17/13).

The family will receive friends from 3 until 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church, 7335 Springfield School Road, Lucama with funeral services starting at 4 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dr. Sefton Strickland and the Strickland family will be conducting the service.

Sara was born in Columbia, S.C. to the late Dr. Everett Russell Van De Grift, Jr. and Rosalind Maxwell Van De Grift. She was a saint and savior to every living creature both two and four legged. She was a devoted wife and mother. She worked actively in the Presbyterian Women and worked as the right hand of Sefton for 59 years. Sara's favorite hobby was “collecting friends” and her favorite season was “every day is God's Gift.” She worked for the Salvation Army in Sanford for ten years.

Sara is survived by her husband, Rev. Dr. Sefton Strickland; daughters, Debora McEwen and husband, Chip of Fort Myers, FL and Angelia Strickland of Olivia; sons, Sefton B. Strickland III and wife, Darlene of West End, Scott Strickland of Naples, FL and Russell Strickland and Amanda of Carthage; grandchildren, Terry, David, Zach, Amber, Joshua, Katie, Kristen, Silas, Samuel and Sefton; one great-granddaughter; siblings, Dr. E.R. Van De Grift and wife, Brenda of Columbia, SC and Dorothy V. Raxter and husband, Dale of Virginia Beach, VA; nieces and nephews, Dale, Rosalind, Trisha, Stephanie, Melanie, Edward, Kimberly, Justin, Todd and Emily; her best friends, Chester and Daisy; and all the many wonderful people of the community.

FUQUAY-VARINA — Otho Chester Snipes, 86, died Wednesday (8/15/13) at RexHealth Care in Raleigh.

A native of Harnett County, he was the son of the late Otha Jay and Ozell Davis Snipes and was preceded in death by an infant sister, Doris Snipes, and a brother, Russell Gaither Snipes. He graduated from Fuquay Springs High School and served 17 months in the U.S. Navy. Following his time in the military, he attended and graduated from N.C. State College (now N.C. State University) with a degree in Agriculture and a minor in Horticulture. Mr. Snipes was a lifelong farmer in the Fuquay-Varina area. He was a member, former deacon and church treasurer of Rawls Baptist Church.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Rawls Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina with the Rev. Clarence Hardison Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Rawls Baptist Church, and other times at his home.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosalyn Smith Snipes; daughters, Betsy Snipes Griswold and Diane Leigh Snipes; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

LILLINGTON — Funeral service for Gary McNeill, 52, who died Saturday (8/10/13), was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Knotts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carolyn Ratcliff.

SANFORD — Mary Lee Huggins Helms, 80, died Wednesday (8/14/13).

Graveside services will be held at a later date.

She was born in Mecklenburg County, a daughter of the late Lonnie Odell Huggins and Lattice Brown Shelton Huggins.

She is survived by four sons, Phillip Gene Helms Jr. and wife Sue, Lonnie Dale Helms and wife Rachel, Charles Nance "Chip" Helms, and Leslie Alan Helms; four grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Ann Huggins Szwed and husband Val; and a brother, Jimmie B. Huggins.

LILLINGTON — Miguel Salas Morales, 48, and his son, Miguel Salas Moreno, 10, died Monday (8/12/13) in Louisiana as a result of an automobile accident.

Miguel worked in construction in Harnett County and his son little Miguel was a student at Lillington-Shawtown Elementary School in Lillington.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at O’Quinn-Peebles Chapel with Father John J. Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Harnett Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and other times at their home.

Miguel is survived by his wife, Juana M. Salas; sons, Cruz Aguina, Juan Salas, Carlos Salas and Luis Salas; and four grandchildren.

Little Miguel is survived by his mother, Juana M. Salas; and brothers, Cruz Aguina, Juan Salas, Carlos Salas and Luis Salas.
