MARY ELIZABETH JACKSON BOWMAN

SANFORD — Mary Elizabeth Jackson Bowman, age 88, of Sanford, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2014 at Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Sanford.

Mary was born on June 28, 1925 in Stewart, VA to the late James William Jackson, Sr. and Belva Tickel Jackson. She was a member of the East Sanford Baptist Church in Sanford. Mary retired from Coty after many years of service. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, and being involved at her church.

She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Williams of Lemon Springs, NC; two sons: Gary Bowman of Sanford, and Donald Ray Bowman and wife Carolyn of Sanford; two sisters: Lucille Mims of Broadway, NC and Dot Stanley and husband Burton of Sanford, NC; a brother, John Jackson and wife Barbara of Sanford, NC; two aunts: Sammie Tickel Phillips of Sanford, NC and Eva Tickel Bobbitt of Mt. Airy, NC and an uncle, Bob Robert Tickel of South Carolina; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews survive her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Larry Henry Bowman.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at East Sanford Baptist Church. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral service from 12-2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Cemetery.

WALDO BUCHANAN

BROADWAY — Waldo Buchanan, 71, of Broadway, died Sunday (1/26/14) at Westfield Rehab and Health Center.

He was born in Harnett County, the son of the late Leon and Hazel Lee Harrington Buchanan. He was preceded in death by his brother, Biddle Buchanan. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Broadway.

Graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Broadway with the Rev. Doug Houston officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Friday from 2 to 3 p.m. and other times at the home.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lida Buchanan; two daughters, Melissa Godfrey and husband Glenn of Sanford, and Tammy Wilson and husband Jed of Bunnlevel; son, Tim Buchanan and wife Kim of Broadway; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Mess Freeman of Broadway.

RICHARD PARKER JACKSON

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Richard Parker Jackson, 72, died Thursday (1/23/14) at his home.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jeannie Curnow of Floresville, Texas; his parents, Arthur and Beulah Jackson of Sanford; and three brothers, Brady Jackson of Fayetteville, Charles Jackson of Garner and Norman Jackson of Beckley, W.Va.

He is survived by a daughter, Yvette Maris and husband Michael; sisters, Ruby Powell of Cary, Nellie Gillis of Sanford and Barbara Nichols of Raleigh; three grandchildren; and special friend, Mary Gracia.

Funeral service will be held Thursday at Mission Park Funeral Chapel South in San Antonio. Visitation will begin one hour before the service at 9 a.m. followed by interment at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors.

ROBERT LEE ABSHIRE

CAMERON — Robert Lee Abshire, 75, of Cameron, died Sunday (1/26/14) at Central Carolina Hospital.

He was born in Bunker Hill, W.Va., on Dec. 19, 1938, to the late Boyd Abshire and Mae Frances Tharp Abshire.

He is survived by his son, Bret Thatcher and wife Karen of New York; two daughters, Kym Perrella and husband Gary, and Sheryl Lynne Smith, all of West Virginia; brother, Hal Abshire and wife Lynn of Cameron; sister, Susie Maghan and husband Dan of Cameron; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. Services will be held at a later date in Charles Town, W.Va., at Oakland Methodist Church.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Jasmine Te'yonna Wicker, 20, who died Wednesday (1/22/14), was held Monday at 1 p.m. at Works For Christ Christian Center with Pasor Jason Trusell and Elder Malcolm Currie officiating. Interment was at Lee Memory Gardens.

The church choir sang.

Pallbearers were Charles Wicker, Charlie White, Artis McDougald, Rodney Jackson, Jeff Person and Kevin Hancock.

SANFORD — Graveside service for Vivian Maxine Sineath Freeman, 75, who died Monday (1/27/14), was conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lee Memory Gardens with Pastor Bruce MacInnes presiding.

Recorded music of Randy Travis was played.

GOLDSTON — Edna Dickerson Barber, 77, of Goldston-Glendon Road, Goldston, died Saturday (1/25/14) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

She was born In Granville County on Aug. 18, 1936, the daughter of John Thomas and Fannie (Faucette) Dickerson. She attended Antioch Baptist Church. She was retired after 48 years of service from Townsends. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Steve Barber; brothers, William "Bill" Dickerson and Walter Dickerson; and sister, Thelma Ann Dickerson.

She is survived by her husband, Mosley Barber; one son, Dennis Barber and wife Wendy of Newport; sisters, Betty Sue Crews of Oxford, Jenny Russell of Creedmoor, Jane Bridges of Franklinton and Maryanna Oldham of Goldston; two brothers, Thomas Dickerson of Sanford and Tony Dickerson of Franklinton; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Griffith and the Rev. Mike Garner officiating.

SANFORD — Phillip M. Register Sr., 92, of Sanford died Tuesday (1/28/14).

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Grace Chapel Cemetery.

He was born in Lee County, son of the late John Harrison Register and Annie Belle Foushee Register. He was a member of Grace Chapel Church, a Navy veteran of W.W. II, and preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee O’Neil Register.

He is survived by his son, Phillip M. Register Jr. of Sanford; and a nephew.

SANFORD — John Thomas Harmon, 76, of N.C. Hwy. 27 West, Sanford, died Sunday (1/26/14).

A celebration of life ceremony will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Ministries.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Cruz Harmon; two sons, Steve Harmon and Art Harmon, both of Sanford; and one daughter, Bernice Rhodes of Sanford.
