MARY LOUISE McLAUGHLIN

SANFORD — Mary Louise McLaughlin, 54, of the 700 block of Magnolia Street, Sanford, died Tuesday (2/4/14) at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill. 

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 3324 Truelove St., Sanford. Walk through will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Waymond and Clara Mae Hill. Survivors include her husband, Donald McLaughlin; sons, Derrick McLaughlin and Donald McLaughlin, Jr.; brothers, Terry Hill (Patricia) and Lamont McLean; sisters, Clara Ann Siler (Dwight), Gloria McNeill (Milton), Deloris, Darlene and Marlene; three grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

ZELMA WICKER ‘SALLY’ MAYFIELD

SANFORD — Zelma Wicker “Sally” Mayfield, 96, of Sanford, formerly of Florida, died Saturday (2/8/14) at her home.

THOMAS McAULEY

BROADWAY — Thomas McAuley, 92, of the 100 block of Macks Lane, Broadway, died Wednesday (2/5/14) at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehab Center, Sanford.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Love Grove AME Zion Church, Sanford.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in his name.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ester McLean McAuley, two sons, Tommie McAuley of Orlando, Fla., and Herman McAuley (Audris) of Oviedo, Fla.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four sisters-in-law, Mildred McIver and Lois Cotten of Broadway, Annie Gaines of East Orange, N.J., and Amelia Glenn of Rochester N.Y.; one brother-in-law, Wallace McLean of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

ELOISE GREENE WARD

ELLERBY — Eloise Greene Ward, 71, of Ellerbe died Thursday (2/6/14) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage conducted by the Rev. Troy Wiley. Burial will follow at the family home in Ellerbe.

A native of Moore County, she was a daughter of the late Avery M. Greene and Mable Rouse Greene. She was a member of Shiloh Tabernacle and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Terria Dawn Brewer, and grandson, Robbie Speer.

She is survived by daughters, Terria Brewer of Carthage and Regina Ward of Ellerbe; sons, Shelton Brewer and wife Herlinda of Carthage, Vincent Brewer and wife Paulina of Carthage, James Brewer of Carthage, Sandy Scott Brewer; stepdaughters, Cynthia Brown of Starke, Fla., and Melinda Grady of Calabash, N.C.; stepsons Johnny R. Ward and wife Liz of Southern Pines, Ralph Jay Ward of Jacksonville, Fla., Roger W. Ward of Keystone Heights, Fla.; 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and other times at the home of Shelton and Herlinda Brewer, 1125 S. McNeill St., Carthage.

WILLIAM ‘BILL’ DAVID LANE JR.

CAMERON — William “Bill” David Lane, Jr., 53, of Cameron, died Friday (2/7/14) at his home.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pineywood Baptist Church with the Rev. Jimmy Settle and the Rev. Charles Lassiter officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was born in Sanford on May 5, 1960, to William David Sr. and Virginia Spivey Lane.

He is survived by his parents; one sister, Lisa Thomas of Broadway; three brothers, Danny Lane of Cameron, George Bartley Lane and wife Amy of New Hill, and Steven Mark Lane and wife Jean of Cameron.

A visitation will be held at from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday Cox Memorial Funeral Home.

DORTHY R. McDOUGAL

SANFORD — Funeral serves for Dorthy R. McDougal, 80, of Sanford, who died Jan. 31., were held at 1 p.m. Thursday (2/6/14) at Mt. Zion Freewill Baptist Church, 903 Burgess Circle, Broadway. Elder Thomas McGilveary officiated and interment was held at McDougal Cemetery in Broadway. 

Musicians included the church choir. Pallbearers were James Wilkerson, Reginald Cox Sr., Al Aikens, Scott Pearson, Rufus McNeil and James Lee Redwine.

Arrangements were by Knotts Funeral Home.

 

WENONA E. THOMAS

VASS — Funeral service for Wenona E. Thomas, 88, of Vass, who died Jan. 29, was held at 11 a.m. Saturday (2/8/14) at Fryes Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Vass.

Elder Kent McMillian and Elder Mary Kelly officiated. Interment was at Fryes Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Musicians were Shared Ministries Ensemble and God’s House of Prayer Church with soloist Sister Mary Kelly. Pallbearers were friends of the family.

MARY O. HOOKER

SANFORD — Funeral service for Mary O. Hooker, 93, of Sanford, who died Jan. 31, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday (2/8/14) at Tempting Congregational Church.

Pastor Barry Palmer officiated and interment was at Tempting Congregation Church Cemetery in Sanford.

Musicians were the Tempting Congregational Choir with Charlie Howes as the soloist. Pallbearers were friends of the family.

CARRIE LEE CAMPBELL CLIFTON

SANFORD — Carrie Lee Campbell Clifton, 94, of Sanford, died Friday (2/7/2014) at her residence.

She was born in Lee County on July 15, 1919, to the late Marvin Pierce Campbell and Sally Corina Webster Campbell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James Bernard Clifton; four brothers, John Martin Campbell, Wade Campbell, Doyle Campbell, and Alton Campbell and three sisters, Annie Buchanan, Elva Harrington, and Mary Elizabeth Campbell.

She is survived by a son, Jimmy Clifton and wife Linda; daughters, Judy Leslie and husband Carl and Sandra Fleming and husband Howard, all of Sanford; eight grandchildren, Michael Leslie, Connie Leslie, Henry Clifton, Bonnie Howard, Eddie Clifton, Julie Wilder, Kenny McFarland, and Brian McFarland; seven great-grandchildren, Hailey Howard, Joshua Howard, Aubrey Wilder, Gabe Wilder, Jadeon McFarland, Avery McFarland, and Tessa McFarland; four step-grandchildren, Valerie Myers, Chris Fleming,  Sara Hinshaw, and Chanler Chuman and five step-great- grandchildren, Solana Wild, Adalyn Fleming, Bennett Fleming, Parker Hinshaw, and Tyler Hinshaw.

The family will receive friends from 10 - 11 a.m. Monday at Northview Christian Church. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Northview Christian Church with Dr. Michael Johnson and Dr. Brian Parker presiding. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens.

CHATTANOOGA — Virginia Copeland Neal, 94, of Chattanooga, died on Jan. 28.

A celebration of life and memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Buffalo Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Paul Shields officiating. Interment will be in Buffalo Cemetery.
