ALAYNA NELL CURRIN

BROADWAY — Alayna Nell Currin, infant daughter of Eric Currin and Cindy Matthews, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Lucille Barefoot Matthews.

A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 at Summerville Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. James Taylor officiating.  The family will receive friends at Alayna’s parents home.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her big sister, Abigayle; maternal grandfather, Billy Ray Matthews of Lillington; paternal grandparents, Nelson and Debbie Currin of Lillington; paternal great-grandmother, Faye Jernigan; aunt, Catherine C. Burgess and husband Eddie; uncles: Tony Matthews, Bodie Currin and wife Allison, and Brandon Currin and wife Marti.

MARY LEE ELLIS

GOLDSTON — Mary Lee Ellis, 86, of Goldston died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.

Mrs. Ellis was born June 10, 1927, the daughter of Murd and Lula Hart Klass. Mrs. Ellis was a native of Chatham County. Mary Lee worked at Chatham Hospital and later cared for children at her home. Mary Lee was a member of Goldston United Methodist Church for 76 years. She loved to sew and her flowers. Mary Lee was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Ellis and grandson, Jason Clark.

She is survived by daughters: Joyce E. Clark and husband Melvin of Siler City, and Verna Ellis of Goldston, son: Jimmy Ellis; grandchildren, Alan Clark and wife Phyllis, Larry Clark, Kevin Ellis, Krista Ritter and husband John and Michael J. Pister Jr.; great-grandchildren, Amy Clark, J.C. Ritter, Cody Ritter and Casey Duckworth; great-great-grandchild, Jace Duckworth and her beloved pet Katie.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Goldston United Methodist Church, with the graveside service following in the Goldston Cemetery, with Rev. David King and Rev. Thomas Simpson officiating.

Family will be at the home of Verna Ellis in Goldston.

EVELYN REEVES STOCKS GENTRY

SANFORD — Evelyn Reeves Stocks Gentry, 84, went to her Heavenly Home on Saturday, October 5, 2013.

Born in Columbus County, N.C., Evelyn moved to Sanford, N.C. in the early 1950s where she became a Christian and joined Sanford Wesleyan Church. She was a Board member, leader, and Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. Evelyn's life was exemplified by serving others. She enjoyed cooking, writing poetry and music, singing, and sewing beautiful garments. In January of 1995, she and Rev. Eugene Gentry were married and resided in joy at their home on Whippoorwill Lane.

Evelyn was preceded in death by parents, Fannie and John Morgan Reeves; husband, Rev. Eugene Gentry; and 14 siblings.

Surviving are three sisters: Lena Russ, Mable Blanton, Sally Connor; many beloved nieces and nephews; stepchildren: Rev. Warren Gentry (Donna), Phyllis Gentry Kidd (Henry), Sharon Gentry Felten (Brian), and Patricia Gentry Dowdy (Mark); twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend deep gratitude to Hospice of Liberty and the many loving friends who were Evelyn's support team, prayer warriors, and helping hands. We are eternally grateful for your care.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

JIMMIE LUTTERLOH PHILLIPS

LAKELAND, Fla. — Jimmie Lutterloh Phillips, 75, formerly of Gulf, died Thursday (9/26/13) at home.

He was the son of William Lacy and Annie Morris Phillips and was a graduate of Goldston High School and the Cincinnati College of Embalming. He was preceded in death by his father, William Lacy Phillips, and a sister, Jane Brown.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Phillips; a daughter, Christie Lryons; his mother, Annie Morris Phillips of Sanford; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gulf Presbyterian Church.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

MONCURE — Funeral service for Carolyn Hackney, 58, who died Wednesday (10/2/13), was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Liberty Chapel in Moncure with Pastor Norma K. Bryant officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

The church choir sang and soloists were Kristy Leigh Cross and Laguanda Norman.

Pallbearers were members of the class of 1973.

JOHN THOMAS VERNON

SANFORD — Memorial service for John Thomas “Tom” Vernon, 87, who died Monday (9/30/13), was held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church by the Rev. M. Timothy Martin, assisted by Kendra Martin. The cross bearer was Phillip Lloyd.

During the service the congregation sang, the pianist was Tamara Lewis, and the eulogy was by Eric Vernon.

TODD FREEMAN BROWN

BEAR CREEK — Todd Freeman Brown, 48, died Saturday (10/5/13) at Chatham Hospital Inc. in Siler City.

He was born in Chatham County on July 6, 1965, the son of Fields Freeman and Betty Ann Beal Brown. He was member of White Cross Baptist Church, and worked with Goldkist-Pilgrams Pride as a maintenance supervisor for 28 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jeff and Don Brown; and a great-nephew.

He is survived by his wife, Amy Beavers Brown; daughter Amber Brown of the home; son Fields Brown of the home; sisters Joan B. Cockman and husband Mike of Franklinville and Doan B. Clark and husband Vernon of Siler City; brother Terry Brown and wife Annette of Franklinville; 17 nieces and nephews; four great-nieces and one great-nephew.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Smith and Buckner Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at White Cross Baptist Church in Staley with the Rev. Edward Brown officiating. Burial will be at Meroney United Methodist Cemetery in Bear Creek.
