SANFORD — Sarah Carolyn Vernon Taggart, 91, of Sanford, NC, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 8, 2013, after a ten-year battle with breast cancer.

Carolyn was born in Dalton, Georgia, on December 15, 1921. She grew up in Tifton, Georgia. Carolyn met her husband, Jim, while both were working at Western Union in Panama City, Florida. They married in 1943 in Neosho, Missouri, where Jim was stationed during WWII. After the war, they spent several years in Bermuda before settling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Throughout her lifetime, they lived in Westfield, New Jersey; Lima, Ohio; Boynton Beach, Florida; and Sanford, North Carolina. They owned and operated a successful plumbing supply business in Lima and Toledo, Ohio. During retirement, she and Jim traveled extensively to many places such as Russia, China, Australia, Mexico, Turkey, Yugoslavia, and most of Europe and the UK. Having grown up in the South, she enjoyed spending several warm winters in Argentina. Carolyn was an avid and successful golfer, playing with her husband in many club events at Shawnee Country Club in Lima, OH, Delray Dunes Country Club in Boynton Beach, FL, and Carolina Trace Country Club in Sanford, NC. Both were private pilots and flew to many destinations in their own aircraft. This past April, Carolyn and Jim celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Carolina Trace.

Carolyn had an affinity for music, playing both clarinet and piano. Golf was both a hobby and passion for her. She was a very good ball striker, and possessed a tremendously accurate short game, particularly with the putter. However, her primary love in life was her family.

Her loving husband, James Edward Taggart, survives her. She is also survived by her four children: Carol Ann Moran and husband, William, of Raleigh; Pamela Becker of Garner; Kimberly T. Hendren and husband, Johnny, of Wendell; and James Vernon Taggart and wife, Regina, of Cary; four grandchildren: Karen Gleason and husband, Jeremy, of Clayton; Jill Miroglio and husband, Anthony, of St. Helena, California; Jackson Edward Taggart and Monica Sarah Taggart of Cary; two great-granddaughters, Piper Gleason and Ava Miroglio.

A special thanks from the family goes to Dr. Mark Graham and Diane Turnbull, RN of Waverly Oncology for their extraordinary medical skills and unrelenting compassionate care.

In her memory, donations to any breast cancer organization are appreciated.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 12, 2013, at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Sanford, NC.
