STEPHEN H. SUTTON

SAINT PAULS — Stephen H. "Bug" Sutton, 96, of Saint Pauls, died Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Mr. Sutton retired as Public Works Director for the Town of Saint Pauls. He was born November 19, 1916 in Pinehurst, N.C. to the late Dan Sutton and Nancy Jane Hall. He was also preceded in death by his son, Richard; wives, Clara and Dorothy; siblings, Thomas "Buster" Sutton, Ellis Sutton, Margaret "Seady" Sutton and Annie Maxine Graham.

He is survived by his brother, Earl and his wife Doris of Saint Pauls; stepchildren, Carol Daniel, Bobby Morris and Harold Morris; grandchildren, James Sutton of St. Pauls, Carolyn Sutton Deweese of Charleston, Patricia Sutton Mitchell of Tennessee; daughter-in-law, Gloria Smith Sutton of Saint Pauls; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday 3/12/13 at Philadelphus Presbyterian Church cemetery in Red Springs. Visitation is scheduled for Monday 3/11/13 from 6-8 p.m. at McNeill Mackie Funeral Home of St. Pauls.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice.

ERLENE STANLEY MCPHERSON

CAMERON — Erlene Stanley McPherson, 90, formerly of Cranes Creek Road, died Saturday (3/9/13) at Hunter Hill Nursing and Rehab. Center of Rocky Mount.

She was born in Surry County on Aug. 6, 1922, to the late Nathaniel Stanley and Lila Holyfield Stanley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Luther M. McPherson Sr.; brothers, Clyde Stanley, Lloyd Stanley and John David Stanley; and sisters, Loyce Faulk and Maude Clark. She was employed by JC Penney in Sanford for 13 years prior to being employed as a Moore County Deputy Clerk of Court.

She is survived by her sons, Hugh Stanley McPherson and wife Delores of Rocky Mount and Luther M. McPherson Jr. and wife Lynda of Weddington; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at Cameron Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Green presiding. The family will receive friends one hour (2 to 3 p.m.) prior to the service in the church. Burial will follow at the Cameron Town Cemetery.

SANFORD — Funeral service for Ussery Grant Burns, 85, who died Friday (3/8/13), was held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Shallow Well Cemetery.

During the service, the speaker was Dennis Mark, the opening prayer was by Lindell Graham, soloist was Simeon Gay, organist was Eugenia Thompson, and a poem was read by Ann B. Oldham.

Pallbearers were Percy Burns, Jim Hancock, Petry Mark, Greg Oldham, Patrick Oldham and John Philbeck.

ROBBINS — Odessa B. Thomas, 83, of 2128 N. Howard Mill Road, died Friday (3/8/13) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.

She was born Oct. 19, 1929, in Moore County to the late Henry T. Brower and Ada M. Brower. She was a member of New Zion AME Zion Church of Robbins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlee E. Thomas; two children, Clyde Thomas and Vermestine Thomas; two brothers, Clinton Brower and Hosea Brower; and two sisters, Annie Mae Brower and Ocia Barrett.

She is survived by four children, Sonny Brower (Brenda), Gwen Gillis, Phillip Thomas and Leith Frye (Jr.); 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; four sisters, Dorothy Barrett, Beulah Shamberger, Eula Johnson and Willa Howard; one sister-in-law, Gerushia Wrencher; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at New Zion AME Zion Church with the Rev. Jerry Dowdy officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service.

SANFORD — Mary Kathryn “Kathy” Thomas Simmons, 55, died Saturday (3/9/13) at her home.

She was born in Lee County, daughter of the late Len Broughton Thomas and Beulah Johnson McClung Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eric Simmons; and daughter, Jo Leigh Simmons.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Parsons and Ray Hockaday officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughter, Erica Leigh Simmons Knapp of Cameron; sister, Carol Jean Thomas of Sanford; brothers, Len Broughton Thomas Jr. of Broadway and Conrad Wayne Thomas of Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren; three nieces and five nephews.

SILER CITY — Frances Petty Denise, 66, of Bonlee-Bennett Road, died Sunday (3/10/13).

She was born in Chatham County on July 27, 1946, the daughter of Murphy Linwood and Edith (White) Petty. She was a member of Tyson's Creek Baptist Church and had been employed as manager of Belk's in Siler City.

She is survived by her husband, Buddy Denise; one daughter, Kimberly Corder Joyce and husband Shane of Siler City; one son, Kip Corder of Siler City; three brothers, W.L. (Buck) Petty and wife Elaine of Moravian Falls, Robert W. Petty and wife Betty, and James E. (Jim) Petty and wife Jane, all of Siler City; stepson, Forrest Denise III of Fuquay-Varina; five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends today from 6 until 8 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City.

Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Tyson's Creek Baptist Church in Bear Creek with the Rev. Scott Walker and the Rev. Randy Hand officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

CAMERON — Swannie “Christine” Holt Douglas, 79, died Saturday (3/9/13).

She was born in Wake County on July 12, 1933, to the late Charles Edward Holt and Swannie Lorainne Sauls Holt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Irvin Douglas; sister, Ruby Heath; and stepson, Lonnie Douglas. She was employed by Cameron Grill for 10 years and Jonesboro Lee Drug Store for 10 years.

She is survived by daughters, Patricia Ann Newcombe and husband Dave of Ferrum, Va., Deborah Jean Knobel of Sanford and Tammy Dutton and husband Chad of Carthage; sons, William Edward Gregson and wife Pam of Cameron and Richard Franklin Gregson and wife Pamela of Carthage; stepchildren, Tony Douglas, Johnny Douglas and Becky Douglas; 15 grandchildren; 22 great- grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Richard and Pamela Gregson, 275 Bryant Road, Carthage. A memorial service and burial will be private.

CARTHAGE — Funeral service for Lessie Mae Dowdy Caddell, 92, who died Thursday (3/7/13), was held at 12 p.m. Sunday at Stony Hill Freewill Baptist Church in Carthage with Elder Alphonso Wilson officiating. Burial was at John Hall Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Soloist was Alexander Brower.

RICHARD CLYDE MARTINDALE

SILER CITY — Richard Clyde Martindale, 63, of Pleasant Hill Church Road, died Thursday (3/7/13) at home.

He was born in Siler City on Aug. 27, 1949, the son of Millard Clyde Martindale and Ruby Mae Robinson Martindale. He lived in Virginia until moving back to the area in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pittsboro. He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Bobby Martindale.

He is survived by his wife, Erin Abernethy Martindale; daughters, Rachel and Emily Martindale of Siler City, and Jennifer Martindale of Arizona; two grandchildren; brother, Garry Martindale and wife Debra of Richmond, Va.; sister, Vivian Anthony Barker and husband Junior of Rutherford, Va.; and several cousins and extended family.

Memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Saturday from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pittsboro.

LUMBERTON — Martha Boone Prevatte, 80, died Sunday (3/10/13) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

She was born in Robeson County on July 7, 1932, to the late James Boone and the late Alma Mae Bruce Boone. She previously worked as an inspector for Converse. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Prevatte.

She is survived by her sons, Ernie Alton Prevatte, James Alton Prevatte, John William Prevatte, all of Lumberton, and David Andy Prevatte of Sanford; brothers, George Boone, J.D. Boone, Edsel Boone and Sam Boone, all of Lumberton; and sisters, Anna Grace Boone of St. Pauls and Bertha Walton of Monroe.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at North Lumberton Baptist Church with Dr. Allen Admire and the Rev. Anthony Harden officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Lumberton.
