SANFORD — Wilbur Ralph Stephens Sr., age 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (3/13/13).

He was born October 23, 1921 in Erwin, N.C. to the late Joseph Raymond and Ruth Stephens. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, a member of Sanford Masonic Lodge No. 151 AF&AM, Shriners International and the Scottish Rite. He loved volunteering to benefit the Children’s Burn Center and was a past deacon at Rocky Fork Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, the love of his life; a son, Wilbur Ralph Stephens Jr.; brothers, Gerald and Bruce; and a sister, Doris Barnes.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Cashion and husband Barry of Sanford; grandchildren, Steve Stephens (Lee), Debbie Dollar, Eric Cashion (Ginny) and Kimberly Davidson (Rafe); nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a very special family friend, Kay Kelly.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rocky Fork Christian Church with the Rev. Misty Mowery, the Rev. Kevin McHarg and the Rev. Garland Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Buffalo Cemetery with full Masonic Rites.

The family will receive friends at the Rocky Fork Christian Church Fellowship Hall for lunch at the conclusion of the burial and other times at the home of Barry and Barbara Cashion.

CARTHAGE — Dorothy Maples Gellatly, 83, died Wednesday (3/13/13) at Liberty Commons Nursing Facility in Sanford.

A native of Moore County, she was the daughter of the late William Parker Maples and Olie McKenzie Maples. A long-time resident of Carthage and Gettysburg, Pa., she worked 25 years as a real estate agent for Gallatly Real Estate. She and her late husband, George A Gellatly,  owned harness horses while living in Gettysburg.

She is survived by a son, Bill Gellatly and wife Colleen of Maryland.

A memorial service is planned for a later date and will be announced by Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage.

ABERDEEN — Matthew Leo Davis Sr., 77, died Tuesday (3/12/13) at First Health Moore Regional Hospital.

Funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pugh & Smith Funeral Chapel Home. A viewing will be held from 12 until 1 p.m. prior to the service.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Davis; four children, Matthew Davis Jr. (Carmen), Sharon Davis and Cynthia Salaam (Jameel) of Stone Mountain, Ga., and LaShon Holley (Greg ) of Aberdeen; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nannie Piercy and Virginia Williams.

WEST END — Elizabeth “Libby” Thomas Hester, 81, died Tuesday (3/12/13) at her home.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Kenneth Rahal officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

She was born in Fries, Va., on Nov. 1, 1931, to James Graham and Myrtle Dancy Thomas. She worked in the medical field. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Graham and Myrtle Dancy Thomas; one son, Ricky Hester; and two sisters, Alberta Pack and Virginia Thomas.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Hester of West End and Vicky Hester of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Carolyn Waddell of Virginia; one granddaughter and two great-grandchildren.

SANFORD — Margie M. Walters, 87, died Sunday (3/10/13) at Central Carolina Hospital.

She is survived by one daughter, Gena Currie Kelly of Sanford; sons, James Stephen Horton (Cindy) of Charlotte, Billy Bruton (Dana) of Carthage, Gary McIntyre (Myra) of Dallas, Texas, Charles Currie Sharpless, Wilburt Bruton (Deborah), Alfredrick Maurice Horton, and James "Bunny" Walters (Pam) of Sanford; 29 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.

SANFORD — Jonathan Owens, 29, of 403 Dudley St., died Saturday (3/9/13).

He is survived by one daughter, Breanna McKoy of Sanford; four sisters, Melinda King (Kenny) of Henderson, Nev., Necole Hill (Darrin) and LaCrecia Reives, all of Sanford and Charise Owens of New York; four brothers, Marshall Patterson (Angela), Charles Patterson, William Owens and George Owens, all of Sanford; one special friend, Julia McLaughlin; and a host of nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Luther Carter Holder, 83, died Wednesday (3/13/13) at his home.

He was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Harnett County, the son of the late Frank C. and Evie Lee Matthews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Neil Edward Matthews.

Graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Gourd Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Spring Lake. The family will receive friends at O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home in Lillington from 6 until 8 p.m. today.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Faye Holder and grandson Zachary Garrenton of the home; son, Gary Carter Holder and wife Marcia of Spring Lake; daughters, Teresa Lee Daniels of Tappahannock, Va., and Debra H. PITTSBORO — William Edward Smith Jr., 62, of Juleann Lane, died Monday (3/11/13) at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro.

He was born in Chatham County on March 28, 1951, son of the late William Edward Smith and Flossie Mae Brown Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Frances C. Cooper.

Memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Rock Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Tommy Faust.

He is survived by one sister, Lois Pascall of Grants Pass, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.
