LETTER: Reading The Herald is exercise for body, mind

To the Editor:

At your annual checkup, do you hear these words: “You need to exercise more”? I hear that, and one of the ways that I find that is the most pleasant is reading the morning Sanford Herald. What?

You read it online? That’s not the exercise that the doctor means.

To exercise using the paper newspaper — 1: Walk to the end of the driveway to get the newspaper, 2: Walk to the trash can to drop in plastic cover, 3: Find a comfortable seat and using both arms, flip (or flap) the paper, extending it to its full length, read page one; using your left arm, reach across your body to the right side and lifting the first page, read page two. And don’t forget the funnies.

You can see where this is going, can’t you? With the motion of your left and right arms crossing and criss-crossing your body, soon you will have exercised your upper body, your mind and your legs — as you have walked to the mailbox and back, to the trash can and back, and no doubt you have made a note or two of some event that is happening in and around our town of Sanford and Lee County. Perhaps you have increased your social life as well by jotting down a play that you want to attend that is coming soon to the Temple Theatre or an event at Depot Park.

Friends, life is much, much too short to be serious all the time. Live life to the fullest, and that will include as much laughter as you can experience. After all, laughter is jogging on the inside!
