LETTER: In Pittsboro, positive approach yields results

To the Editor:

Last week, I noticed that once again the Pittsboro ABC Store, under the leadership of its board and chair, Jim Nass, presented another ABC distribution to the Town of Pittsboro.

Today's situation is a far cry from nine years ago when the ABC store was distributing nothing to the town or law enforcement and was floundering.

Naturally, the 2009 liquor-by-the-drink referendum has impacted the bottom line for the ABC Store and allowed Chatham County, Pittsboro and Siler City to attract and open new and different restaurants and venues, but it's not the whole story.

The positive changes are remarkable and due to a number of factors, including leadership by former Town Commissioners Hugh Harrington and Chris Walker, current commissioner Mike Fiocco, current Mayor and former Town Manager Bill Terry, and members of the ABC Board and Town Board who committed to ameliorating past problems and running a good business for the town.

This success story proves that a bipartisan, community-oriented approach can work and yield results that benefit the entire community.
