LETTER: Remembering Jack Miller
To the Editor:
Lt. Col. Jack Miller, U. S. Marine Corps (retired), passed away on Nov. 22.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, Jack was the personification of the Marine Corps’s motto: Semper Fidelis, Latin for ”Always Faithful.”
Jack was, indeed, faithful to, and honorably served, his family, his friends and neighbors, his country and his God.
Lee County military veterans will long remember Jack as a dedicated warrior who supported all of their organizations. His abilities and tireless efforts will be missed.
Many families will not remember his name but will also miss him, especially at Christmastime. The Marine Corps Reserves, of which Jack was an active member, runs the “Toys for Tots” program before Christmas each year. Jack spent an enormous amount of time and effort to make sure that every qualifying child in Lee County received appropriate toys. He was passionate about making sure that this project was operated properly in every respect.
Jack chose to carry out missions without being asked, without fanfare and without seeking acknowledgment.
Jack Miller, my neighbor and close friend, was one of the finest men that I have ever known. In addition to our family, he had a significant impact upon the lives of many people, including some who never even knew him — but that was fine with Jack. He was a servant.
