LETTER: Proudly supporting Evie
To the Editor:
The Sanford Herald published a wonderful article about Evie (Jan. 23). I was happy to see the story about her upcoming kidney transplant spread throughout our area. Evie is a sweet child, and her donor, Jenn, is amazing. The love shown is incredible.
Stories such as Evie’s are not as uncommon as you would think. More than 100,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant, and, in addition, thousands more are searching for a bone marrow/stem cell/cord blood match. Each day, about 77 people receive an organ transplant. and each day, 19 people die waiting for one.
The cost of organ transplants varies depending on the type of transplant and where the procedure is done. Evie’s procedure will likely cost more than $400,000. As a volunteer for COTA for Evie W, I am excited to be able to help raise funds for transplant-related costs. I will be running in 10 races over the next 10 months to raise awareness of Evie and raise funds for COTA in honor of Evie W.
My first race is coming up on Feb. 15 — just three days before Evie’s transplant is scheduled. If you would like to cheer me on, come on out for the 10th annual President's Day Freedom Run at San-Lee Chapel on Keller Andrews Road. The race starts at 10 a.m. If you would like to sponsor me as I raise funds for COTA in honor of Evie W, just go to www.COTAforEvieW.com. Copy "Run Jayne Run" in the comment section of your donation form.
Let’s help COTA for Evie W reach its $45,000 goal!
