LETTER: To see tyranny, look no further than Obama

Jun. 04, 2013 @ 04:58 AM

To the Editor:

Our esteemed campaigner in chief, President Barack Obama, recently said in a commencement address, "Unfortunately, you've grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that's at the root of all our problems. ... They'll warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices."

First off, by telling students to reject opposing voices, this is what tyranny looks like. Using the Internal Revenue Service to intimidate your political opponents and suppressing their vote, this is what tyranny looks like. Showing favoritism (nepotism) to your non-citizen half-brother's filing for his Muslim nonprofit tax exempt status, this is what tyranny looks like.

Forcing religious institutions to violate their most fundamental freedom, the right to conscientiously object, this is what tyranny looks like. Targeting and publicly ridiculing citizens, who exercise their First Amendment right to speak freely, peaceably assemble and petition their government for a redress of grievances, this is what tyranny looks like.

Using the bully pulpit and your media myrmidons to demonize the oldest civil rights organization in this country, the National Rifle Association, this is what tyranny looks like. Staging an illegal gun-running operation (Operation Fast and Furious) to murderous Mexican drug cartels resulting in the death of hundreds, in order to win public sympathy to repeal the Second Amendment, this is what tyranny looks like.

When your media myrmidons fall out of lock-step with you because they ask fact-finding questions, and your Attorney General "judge shops" in order to subpoena their private correspondence and conversations, this is what tyranny looks like.

Ferreting out and punishing government whistle-blowers who risk exposing government malfeasance, this is what tyranny looks like. Using predator drones to execute American citizens without due process, this is what tyranny looks like.

Mandating suffering amongst our most vulnerable citizens through the use of "sequestration," this is what tyranny looks like. Standing on a balcony while addressing military families assembled on the White House lawn, this is what a tyrant looks like.

As always, I shall remain, fearlessly anticipating my I.R.S. audit.
