LETTER: Situation traced to Rep. Stone

To the Editor:

I was disappointed to read two letters that so badly distorted the recent controversy concerning the CCCC trustees. The facts were “stood on their head.”

This situation can be traced to our N.C. House Rep. Mike Stone. You remember that Rep. Stone campaigned with the mantra of jobs, jobs, jobs. But since he assumed office, he has been involved in politically motivated redistricting (to protect his job), voter suppression (which will create a costly government program to issue voter IDs) and creating partisan local elections (again making taxpayers foot the bill for the cost of primaries).

This latest debacle is one of his attacks on public education. Rather than have educators at the Board of Education appoint the CCCC trustees, he wants to have them appointed by politicians! Our community college is among the best in our excellent state system, and this is due in part to the dedication and hard work of this group. Thank goodness they are standing up for our students, Lee County and themselves. Thank goodness a fair-minded judge agreed with them, and shame on ideologically motivated extremists.
