LETTER: Flying flag at half-staff is presidential prerogative
To the Editor:
A recent letter complained that flags were flown at half staff to honor Nelson Mandela. [The writer] also complained that the flag should have been lowered for Pearl Harbor day.
The flag is always lowered on four days — Patriot Day (Sept. 11), Peace Officer Memorial Day (May 15), Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7) and until noon on Memorial Day.
After the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, George Bush ordered the flag lowered for five days. President Bush also ordered the flag lowered for Pope John Paul II for six days. The flag was lowered for Mr. Mandella for only four days.
President Reagan ordered the flag lowered to honor Anwar Sadat. Bill Clinton honored Yitzhak Rabin and King Hussein. President Obama ordered flags to be lowered to honor JFK. Were you against that also?
It is a presidential prerogative to order flags flown at half staff.
