LETTER: ‘Thumbs Down’ for op-ed cartoon

To the Editor:

The Herald deserves a “Thumbs Down” for the cartoon featured on the editorial page on Sept. 22. Al Gore is not responsible for the ominous prediction of rising global temperatures, the melting of the arctic ice cap or increased turbulence in weather patterns. These warnings have come from respected scientists around the world, who have been studying climate concerns for more than 50 years. There is a near consensus in the scientific community that global warming is taking place, that human activities are responsible for these changes, and that the results will be catastrophic over the next hundred years if corrective measures are not taken.

The injection of political ideology and religion dogma into these discussions is not helpful and leads only to confusion and the obstruction of responsible and effective remedies for this growing threat to the health and well-being of our global family. The Neanderthal creature in your cartoon would be a more appropriate characterization for those who resist scientific investigation and discovery in every age.
