Today is a day to celebrate the intellect as local students from four county high schools will participate in the annual Lee County Quiz Bowl.

The Quiz Bowl teams from Lee Christian School, Lee County High School, Lee Early College and Southern Lee High School will field questions in quest of the county title.

It’s great to see our high school students engaged in an educational activity that serves as both a great learning experience as well as a challenge for their academic abilities, all while having a fun time.

Lee Early College was winner of last year's competition. Southern Lee and Lee Christian won the previous two competitions.

Correct answers in last year's competition required knowledge of the precepts of metallurgy, the first line of the 1903 Jack London novel “Call of the Wild” and the name of the king in Greek mythology cursed to an eternal existence of rolling a boulder up a hill only to watch it roll back to the bottom of the hill — Sisyphus.

All of the students participating in today's competition, to begin at 9:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church Old Fellowship Hall, are to be commended for their participation. While there will be one team to walk away with the county title, all of these individuals and teams are winners in the sense that this is an educational activity as well as a true learning experience.

Michael Matochik, director of the sponsoring Lee County Library, has praised the event for emphasizing hard work, academic prowess and the ability to think and act under pressure.

“What is nice about this competition is we are one of maybe a dozen county library systems that still have a Quiz Bowl in the state,” Matochik says.

Other sponsors of the Quiz Bowl include The Sanford Herald, First Presbyterian Church and Friends of the Lee County Library.
