Reclaiming our neighborhoods
To the Editor:
I would like to commend [Sanford] Police Chief [Ronnie] Yarborough for addressing the city council on our city’s recent spike of gun violence.
I tip my hat off to Sheriff [Tracy] Carter and every police officer who is sworn to protect these vicious streets after viewing the bodies of two of three murdered citizens in the past 30 days.
It is apparent that we do have a major problem that neither the police nor the sheriff’s department can possibly solve alone. It is time for us to take off our blindfolds of denial and realize that we not only have gang problems, but also a problem with outright ignorance. We have too many young hoodlums giving true meaning to the words an eye for an eye. It is time for those who have the guts to boldly get involved and stop being silent cowards.
Now until we step up and reclaim our neighborhoods, we can only expect violence to thrive in record numbers of new crimes and new deaths in 2013. So my question is: Are you ready to sweep our streets and throw out the trash called criminals with illegal guns?
