Watch out for the copperhead

To the Editor:

My wife and I have enjoyed using the Greenway. ...

This weekend, my daughter took her two youngest — Alec, 12, and Anna, just days from being 10 — to the Greenway behind Applebee’s. They had their dog, Zoe, on a leash. Beth wanted a photograph of the two and their beloved pet. They scrambled up a big rock just across the bridge behind Applebee’s. As they got down, Zoe began barking at something near the rock. It was a copperhead! When they got home later, the dog's face was swollen badly. An emergency trip to the vet has saved Zoe. It was grace that saved the kids.

With the future expansion, we could increase the possibility of harrowing experiences like that. But I know three folks who will never sit or climb on a rock — or step off the Greenway pavement. So — stay safe and walk!

A pastoral analogy: Satan likes to make the most dangerous places appealingly pleasant. But look out — there is a copperhead in there somewhere.
