LETTER: We should all be offended

To the Editor:

On Saturday, I received a mailer attacking city council candidate Chas Post over his representation of a man who was involved in a tragic traffic accident. This Republican-sponsored ad did not endorse any other candidate and was purely a criticism of Mr. Post's representation of Mr. Ortiz-Soto.

The gist of the mailer is that Mr. Post is bad for Sanford because he is a trial attorney. We should all be offended by such an absurd proposition. The Sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees all people accused of crimes the right to be represented by counsel. The defendant in this case exercised his right. He hired Mr. Post to represent him at no taxpayer expense. He then pleaded guilty to the charges.

No one, including Mr. Post, contested the charges in this tragic accident. Mr. Post did his job. The Republican Party would like you to believe he did it not just well, but too well. What any of this has to do with his ability to serve the people of Sanford is a mystery. The sponsors of this ad should be ashamed.
