LETTER: What was the wrongdoing?

Oct. 31, 2013 @ 04:58 AM

To the Editor:

On Saturday, my mailbox contained a disgusting attack on Chas Post. It was sent by the Lee County Republican Party and cravenly used the photograph of a young child who died in a tragic accident as a means of attacking Mr. Post. ...

Here are the facts: Mr. Post represented the man who ran over the young boy in October of 2012. On the advice of Mr. Post, the defendant pleaded guilty as charged and received the maximum sentence allowable under the law. After serving his sentence, he was deported to Mexico.

What wrongdoing is the Lee GOP insinuating on behalf of Mr. Post? I can't find any.

We are all afforded by the Constitution and our system of law the right to an attorney. For all the bluster from the Lee GOP about patriotism and the Constitution, they've overlooked this important aspect of our justice system.

Mr. Post has deep roots in Sanford. His parents, grandparents and great-grandparents have all been respected members of this community. His grandfather, Norman, fought honorably as a teenager at Okinawa as a U.S. Marine. His other grandfather, Fletcher Harris, served in the N.C. House of Representatives and owned a business that still operates in downtown Sanford. His extended family has always been well regarded here.

Young people like Mr. Post are the future of our city. I hope the people of Sanford will see through this vile and desperate attack on him. I also hope that Mr. Post's opponent will condemn the use of a deceased child's picture in political advertising and condemn the GOP for issuing this mailer on his behalf.
