LETTER: Political propaganda disguised as lessons

To the Editor:

Those who believe that children are receiving a nonagenda driven education in our public schools should be alarmed by the political propaganda veiled as English and civic lessons that occurs on a regular basis. For example, approved Common Core curriculum worksheets available and used by fifth-graders (some, not all school districts) who are learning to streamline bulky writing include the following three sentences to be edited:

“The president makes sure the laws of the country are fair.” Anyone with an understanding of our government knows that ensuring the equality or fairness of a law belongs to the judicial branch. The president simply executes a law (thus executive branch), which is written by Congress, the legislative branch.

“The wants of an individual are less important than the well-being of the nation.” Karl Marx would have been proud of this one. Of course, our founding founders must be rolling in their graves.

“The commands of government officials must be obeyed by all.” Oh really? Says who?

There are also lesson plans for second-graders that begin to teach “fairness and equality” by reading “Harvesting Hope,” a children’s book about Cesar Chavez. If that’s not enough, how about a third-grade lesson plan that references a state employee union’s janitor strike as a way of organizing protests.

Probably the worst part of the Common Core curriculum is that it seems to assume teachers are incapable of teaching without government intervention. These and other instances of politics masquerading as education made me think about a friend from my church back in New Jersey many years ago. Wilfried was raised in 1930s Nazi Germany and was part of the Hitler youth movement and not by choice. If he were alive today and read about what is going on in our schools, I’m sure his comment would be, “Nein! Nein! Sie werden die Geschichte zu wiederholen”!
