LETTER: What a disappointment
To the Editor:
In August 2013, my letter to the Editor “Stone is stepping up on fracking” was published in The Sanford Herald. It stated: “Representatives [Mike] Stone, [James] Boles and [Mike] Hager led the way in the N.C. House to make fracking the safest possible, tirelessly campaigning to stop dangerous legislation that can permanently contaminate Jordan Lake Reservoir, which supplies drinking water to more than 300,000 people and flows out through Harnett and Lee Counties” to the Cape Fear River.
To be sure, ... they fought to keep final approval by the N.C. legislature of the fracking guidelines that were under development at the time. We were assured they were to be the safest in the country.
This year the last of the draft guidelines were released and contain some of the [least safe] guidelines in the country. Last month, these three representatives all did a flip-flop and aggressively supported an Energy Modernization Bill (SB 786) that states these rules could go into place without any further legislative action.
What a disappointment for the citizens of Harnett and Lee counties and the rest of us with drinking water supplied from Jordan Lake Reservoir.
