LETTER: Keep abreast of fracking issue
To the Editor:
Mr. [Robert] Stone is “right on” in his letter to The Sanford Herald, “Hold leaders accountable on environmental issues” (April 9, 2014).
I am relatively new to the debate over fracturing, or “fracking,” but I don’t think you have to be a scientist, geologist or drilling expert to see the potentially negative, possibly devastating, effects this process could have on the people on or near the drilling sites. Having been raised in Sanford in the 50s and 60s and having a great fondness for the town and Lee County, and being a “part-time” resident of the area now (hometown is Fayetteville), I would hate to see the community environmentally compromised by the fracking process.
Like Mr. Stone, I urge Gov. McCrory and our lawmakers in Raleigh, as well as local elected officials, community leaders and activists, and just plain folks like me, to keep abreast of this important issue so that when decisions are made, it will be to the betterment, prosperity and health of all parties who have a “dog in the fight.” As the old saying goes, “Sometimes it’s not nice to play with Mother Nature.”
