The National Night Out program has been a big success over the years, bringing together people in the various participating communities for a good time of fellowship and the opportunity to get to connect with each other just a little better.

The City of Sanford, which has participated in this program since 1996, notes that National Night Out “is a community police partnership that aims to heighten crime prevention awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back. NNO provides an excellent opportunity to meet and get to know your local police officers, fire fighters, elected and city officials, and most importantly, your neighbors.”

This year, the city is sponsoring three events leading up to the National Night Out on Aug. 6. Earlier this month, the community was invited to a free tour of the Sanford Police Department, and this past Saturday, the program was a”Play it Safe” Family Safety Day, where children and parents had the chance to learn about many different ways to keep themselves and their loved ones out of harm’s way this summer. The next event on Aug. 3 will be a demonstration about personal safety.

With the local National Night Out program growing each year, and with this new series of events being added to strengthen the bond between locals and law enforcement, our community has the chance to become stronger and more safety conscious through these beneficial programs.
