LETTER: Herb Thomas very deserving of honor
To the Editor:
I would simply like to share in saying congratulations to the family of Herb Thomas for his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. He truly was very deserving of this honor, as well as being the top vote getter in this class. He was a dominant driver during his time, winning at all kinds of tracks, including multiple wins at treacherous tracks like Darlington and the one-mile track in Langhorne Pa. He dominated while competing against other great drivers such as Lee Petty, Buck Baker, the Flock brothers, Fireball Roberts, Curtis Turner, Junior Johnson and others.
He accomplished great things in a short time — 48 wins/228 starts, first to win three Southern 500’s and first two-time series champion. Had it not been for the tragic and controversial finish of the 1956 season, Herb would have been crowned as the series champion for the third time. Buck Baker was a deserving champion that year based on his performance, and in no way is this intended to disrespect his accomplishments. However, I will always consider Herb a three-time champion.
I look forward to visiting the Hall of Fame and seeing Herb Thomas alongside all the other inductees where he so rightfully belongs as one of the very best.
