Cavaliers, Yellow Jackets, Vikings get winning CFVC starts

Southern Lee 11, Douglas Byrd 10
Southern Lee rallied from a 10-3 deficit to win its Cape Fear Valley Conference opener Tuesday night at Cavalier Stadium.
Ben Gaster held the Eagles through the last four innings for the win, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing three hits, no runs and a walk while getting nine strikeouts.
The Cavaliers scored six runs in the home half of the fourth making it 10-9 Eagles. Southern Lee got a walk-off win with two runs in the seventh.
Christian Wenger was 4 for 5 with four singles, two runs and an RBI. Maxx Taylor drove in three runs and scored twice. Cullen Boyette had two RBI.
Southern Lee (4-1, 1-0) will host Gray's Creek at 7 p.m. Friday. The Cavaliers and Bears shared the CFVC season co-championship last spring.

 

Lee County 8, Gray's Creek 2
Lee County (2-3, 1-0) opened its first-ever Cape Fear Valley campaign cruising by Gray's Creek (1-2, 0-1), one of the league's defending co-champions Tuesday night at Lee County.
The Yellow Jackets took the lead with three runs in the fourth and eventually led 8-1 through six innings.
Lee County will play at Douglas Byrd (1-2, 0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

Union Pines 11, Westover 1
The Vikings (2-2, 1-0) built an 8-0 lead in the first three innings and rolled to a CFVC win at Westover (0-4, 0-1) Tuesday night.
Dalton Garner drove in three RBI and scored a run. Emmitt Carden scored two runs.
Union Pines hosted Western Harnett last night and will host Terry Sanford for a CFVC game at 7 p.m. Monday.

 

Grace Christian 16, Friendship Christian 3
The Crusaders won their home opener, routing Friendship Christian Tuesday afternoon. Nathan Holt got the pitching victory.
Grace Christian (2-1) opens Carolina Christian Conference play hosting Wayne Christian today at 4 p.m.

 

Albemarle 2, Chatham Central 0 - 11 inn.
Albemarle (1-0, 1-0) held the host Bears (0-3, 0-1) to one hit on the night but needed two unearned runs in the 11th inning to finally take a Yadkin Valley victory Tuesday night.
Zack Burke started and pitched eight shutout innings for the Bears, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out 15.
Chase Fuquay relieved Burke and went three innings, allowing two hits, two unearned runs and getting eight strikeouts.
For Albemarle, Justin Crump pitched eight no-hit innings. He totaled 14 strikeouts and three walks. Bryan Blanton got the win in relief, going three innings, allowing two walks and a hit while getting three strikeouts.
Chatham Central fell to Providence Grove in 12 innings on Monday in Bear Creek. The Bears will play at Gray Stone Day at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

 

Randleman 5, Northwood 2
Randleman scored five runs in its last three frames to rally past the Chargers (1-2) Tuesday evening in Pittsboro.
Connor Leinbach's RBI double gave the Chargers the lead in the first inning and Zach Higgins added an RBI single in the second.
Northwood opens Big Eight play at Cedar Ridge at 6:30 p.m. this evening.

 

Riverside 6, Jordan-Matthews 2
Riverside (3-0) won a non-league contest at Jordan-Matthews (2-2) Tuesday night. The Jets will start Mid-State Conference play hosting Reidsville at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

South View 10, Overhills 0
The Jaguars (0-4, 0-1) fell in their first-ever 4A Mid-South Athletic Conference game Tuesday in Spring Lake. The Jags played Harnett Central last night and will play at Cape Fear at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

North Moore 8, South Stanly 6

The Mustangs (2-0, 1-0) opened their Yadkin Valley campaign beating the Rowdy Rebel Bulls (0-5) in Robbins Tuesday night. North Moore scored three in the third to take a 5-4 edge and the Mustangs held the lead from there.

North Moore will play at Union Academy at 4 p.m. Friday.


Softball
Gray's Creek 15, Lee County 5
Lee County (1-2, 0-1) got out to a 3-1 lead through two innings in its first Cape Fear Valley Conference game Tuesday before the visiting Lady Bears (2-1, 1-0) posted seven runs in the third and wound up winning in five innings.
Tessa Wilson went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Lady Jackets and Jacie Arrington had a run and an RBI.
For Gray's Creek, Sarah Wilson went 2 for 4 with a double, a homer, two runs and six RBI and Taylor Powell went 4 for 4 with two runs and two RBI.
Lee County plays at Pinecrest at 6:30 p.m. this evening.

 

Douglas Byrd 11, Southern Lee 1
Douglas Byrd rolled to a CFVC win at Southern Lee Tuesday evening. The Lady Cavaliers (0-2, 0-1) host Fuquay-Varina at 7 p.m. tonight, then Gray's Creek at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

Union Pines 22, Westover 0
The Lady Vikings (2-0, 1-0) romped to an easy win in their CFVC opener at Westover Tuesday night. Union Pines played Western Harnett last night and travel to play Jordan-Matthews at 6 p.m. this evening.

 

Lee Christian 24, Northwood Temple 8
The Lady Falcons (1-2, 1-0) got their first win of the season as they started Carolina Christian Conference play at home Tuesday afternoon. Lee Christian will host Franklin Academy at 4 p.m. Friday.

 

Northwood 7, Granville Central 0
Northwood (2-0) handed Granville Central its first loss of the season on Tuesday evening in Creedmore.
Sophomore Anna Jasper fired a one-hitter while striking out eight for the win.
Mckenzie Allgood's solo home run put the Lady Chargers ahead in the first inning.
Northwood scored three in the third on an RBI single by Kayli Blankenship and a two-run single by Allgood.
Courtney Wilson's RBI double added another run in the Lady Charger fourth. In the sixth, Carson Shaner and Alexa Bernard singled, then a ground out by Wilson scored a run and a single by Jasper drove in another.
Bernard went 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Allgood tallied three RBI and two hits. Jasper went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
Northwood plays a Big Eight game at Cedar Ridge at 6:30 p.m. this evening.

 

Eastern Randolph 3, Jordan-Matthews 2
Eastern Randolph (1-2) scored a run in the fourth to draw even, 2-2, then the go-ahead run in the sixth to edge the visiting Lady Jets (2-2) Tuesday.
Jordan-Matthews played Graham last night and hosts Union Pines at 6 p.m. Thursday.

 

South View 8, Overhills 2
South View (1-1, 1-0) beat the Lady Jaguars (1-3, 0-1) in their first-ever game in the Mid-South Athletic Conference Tuesday at Overhills.
Sophomore Sadie Shaw and freshman Jordan Adcox hit a solo home run apiece for the Lady Jaguars.
Overhills hosted Harnett Central last night and will play a MSAC game at Cape Fear at 7 p.m. Friday.

 

North Moore 11, South Stanly 2
The Lady Mustangs (2-0, 1-0) opened their Yadkin Valley season with an easy win at South Stanly. North Moore jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first.
North Moore will host Union Academy at 6 p.m. Friday.

 

Harnett Central 13, Western Harnett 12
The Lady Trojans outslugged visiting Western Harnett on Monday night in the county rivals' first meeting of the season. Harnett Central (2-1) opens Greater Neuse River action at East Wake at 7 p.m. Friday. Western Harnett (1-3) played at Union Pines last night and will host Pinecrest at 5 p.m. Friday.

 

Girls soccer
Grace Christian 6, Friendship Christian 3
The Lady Crusaders (2-0) won their home opener Tuesday afternoon. Grace Christian ran out to a 3-0 lead by halftime.
Torie Boyte scored a hat trick with Madison Bolen getting two goals and an assist and Bridgette Angeles had a goal and an assist.
The Lady Crusaders will host Freedom Christian at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The Vikings (4-1, 4-1) won a Cape Fear Valley match at Lee County (0-2, 0-2) Tuesday. The Vikings played Gray's Creek yesterday and go to Western Harnett today for a 4:30 p.m. match. The Yellow Jackets played at Westover yesterday and travel to face Middle Creek today at 4 p.m.

 

North Moore 8, Jordan-Matthews 1
The Mustangs (4-0, 3-0 Yadkin Valley) topped the Jets (0-1) in a non-conference match in Robbins Tuesday.
Josh Jones, Danny Garcia, Austin Hunsucker, Jacob Marley, Jacob Jones and Christian Jeffries swept the six singles matches for the Mustangs. The teams of Roque Popoca/Cesar Leon and Justin Edmonds/Stephen Henley won in doubles.
North Moore will host East Montgomery at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Jordan-Matthews plays at Chatham Central at 4:30 p.m. today.

 

Southern Lee 8, Westover 1
The Cavaliers (1-1, 1-1) defeated the visiting Wolverines for a CFVC victory on Monday afternoon. Southern Lee played Terry Sanford yesterday and the Cavaliers will visit Lee County on Monday afternoon for a 4:30 p.m. start.

 

Boys lacrosse
Northwood 9, Kerr-Vance Academy 4
Senior Wesley Meyer scored a hat trick leading the Chargers (1-1) to a win at Kerr-Vance on Monday night.
The Chargers won the second period 3-0 to take a 5-2 halftime lead.
Meyer notched three goals on 14 shots and two assists. Jacob Bass and Rob Hamlet had two goals each. Nick Dean and Tyler Romel had a goal each. Hamlet led the Chargers with eight ground balls. Sophomore keeper Eric Franklin made nine saves.

 

Northwood 10, Northern Durham 8
The Chargers (2-1) made it wins on back-to-back nights hosting Northern Durham (1-2) Tuesday night.
Wesley Meyer led the Chargers with five goals and an assist. Jacob Bass scored three goals. Jacob Friedman and Sean O'Donnell had a goal each. Eric Franklin made 20 saves.
Northwood will host Orange at 6 p.m. Friday.

 

Apex 14, Pinecrest 0
Apex routed the visiting Patriots Tuesday night. The Patriots (1-4) will host Panther Creek at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

St. Mary's 13, Pinecrest 11
After the Lady Patriots edged St. Mary's 6-5 last Thursday in Raleigh, St. Mary's turned the table around Tuesday in Southern Pines.
Pinecrest (2-2) will host Panther Creek at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
