NCHSAA 1A State Tournament - second round

Winston-Salem Prep 89, Chatham Central 54

No. 2-seeded Winston-Salem Prep, the defending state champion, ousted No. 10 Chatham Central (14-10) from the state playoffs Wednesday night in Winston-Salem.

Winston-Salem Prep (20-4) got out to a 49-23 lead by halftime. Aaron Lipscomb scored 27 points for Winston-Salem Prep.

Senior Zack Burke led the Bears with 21 points and sophomore Matt Clark added 12 points.


Mount Airy 67, North Moore 59

No. 12 Mount Airy (16-8) pulled off its second upset of the state tournament winning at No. 4 North Moore (16-8) in the second round Wednesday night.

The Mustangs led 33-32 at halftime before Mt. Airy took the third quarter 16-8. Khaileel Bailey led the Bears with 17 points.

Malik McCrimmon scored 17 points for the Mustangs with Malik Chisholm getting 16 points and Quashan Davis getting 11.

North Moore ends the season as East Division champ in the Yadkin Valley Conference.


Girls basketball

NCHSAA 3A State Tournament - second round

West Craven 86, Triton 42

No. 3-seeded West Craven (23-1) led 29-9 after one quarter and kept rolling against No. 14 Triton (10-14) Wednesday night in Vanceboro.

Brittany Smith, with eight points, and Kadizah Gaulden and Leanna Parker, with six points each, led the Lady Hawk scoring.

Triton ends the season as tournament champion of the Two Rivers Conference.
