Lady Jackets open season topping Western Harnett

Lee County 8, Western Harnett 5
In the season opener at Lee County, the Lady Yellow Jackets fell behind in the third inning but immediately rallied to take the lead against the visiting Lady Eagles.
After Western Harnett scored two runs for a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, the Lady Jackets scored five runs in the home half of the inning. Lee County added two more in the fifth for an 8-3 lead. Both sides knocked 12 hits.
Lee County was 6-15 overall, 4-12 in the 4A Tri-Nine Conference, last season. Western Harnett finished second (10-2) in the Cape Fear Valley Conference and made the 3A state tournament. Western Harnett's now in the 3A Two Rivers Conference while Lee County is in its first season in the 3A CFVC.
Lee County plays next at Western Harnett on Wednesday. The Lady Eagles host Overhills at 6 p.m. this evening.


Pinecrest 18, Southern Lee 0
Pinecrest's Jordan Blake pitched a five-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts along the way as the Lady Patriots won on opening night at Southern Lee.
Danielle Gollehon went 4 for 5 at the plate with four runs and four RBI as the Lady Patriots totaled 20 hits and six doubles. Alyssa Drake went 4 for 5 with two RBI and Blake added three runs and two doubles.
The Lady Cavaliers will host Chatham Central at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Pinecrest played Red Springs yesterday and will host North Moore at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.


Jordan-Matthews 12, West Montgomery 2
The Lady Jets started the season with a win at West Montgomery Wednesday. Jordan-Matthews hosts North Moore at 6 p.m. this evening.


Triton 15, Overhills 0
The Lady Hawks scored 10 runs in the third to take a 12-0 lead and roll on to a win versus visiting Overhills. Triton held Overhills to two hits.
Triton hosted Wallace-Rose last night and plays at Harnett Central at 6 p.m. this evening. The Lady Jaguars play at Western Harnett at 6 p.m. this evening.


Southern Lee 4, Jordan-Matthews 2
Southern Lee scored two runs in the fourth to tie the game, then took the lead for good with two runs in the fifth, for an opening-night win over the Jets Wednesday night.
Junior Alex Bullard pitched two shutout innings, allowing one hit, and got the win. Sophomore Ryan Holmes followed Bullard with two shutout innings, allowing no hits and striking out two, for the save.
Connor Showalter went 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Cavs. Cullen Boyette scored two runs. Maxx Taylor had a run and an RBI. Ethan Helsman tripled and scored a run.
Isaiah Stone and Nathan Poirier scored the Jet runs in the top of the second.
Last season, the Cavaliers went 20-8 and shared the Cape Fear Valley Conference season title with Gray's Creek. Jordan-Matthews was 18-7 last season and won the Mid-State tournament title.
Southern Lee plays at Northwood at 6:30 p.m. this evening. The Jets have their home opener versus West Montgomery at 7 p.m. tonight.


Western Harnett 8, Lee County 6
The Eagles defeated the Yellow Jackets on opening day at Lee County Wednesday.
Western Harnett, the defending tournament champion of the Cape Fear Valley Conference, is in its first season in the Two Rivers Conference this spring, while Lee County is in its first season in 3A and the Cape Fear Valley.
Lee County played former Tri-Nine foe Cary yesterday and hosts Pinecrest at 5 p.m. today. The Yellow Jackets were 8-13 overall last spring.
Western Harnett hosts Overhills at 6 p.m. this evening.


Union Pines 6, South View 4
After a pair of South View runs gave the visitors a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning, the Vikings plated six runs in the bottom of the sixth to wind up with an opening-night win Wednesday in Cameron.
Junior Avery Siege hit a solo home run in the Viking rally, then pitched the seventh to get a save. Clay Thomas pitched one inning and got the victory.
Mason Collins had a two-RBI double while Emmitt Carden, Zachary Dinkins and Dalton Garner had an RBI apiece for the Vikings.
Union Pines hosts Asheboro at 5 p.m. today. The Vikings had a 16-9 overall mark last spring.


Pinecrest 6, Asheboro 1
On opening day in Southern Pines, the Patriots broke up a 1-1 score with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and went on to defeat Asheboro. Senior Tristan Helms got the win for the Patriots.
The Patriots visit Lee County today for a 5 p.m. start.


Triton 12, Overhills 1
The Hawks routed visiting county rival Overhills in the opener for both in Erwin Wednesday. Triton went 19-9 overall and reached the second round of the state tournament last season.
The Hawks played Wallace-Rose last night and play at Harnett Central at 7 p.m. tonight. The Jaguars play at Western Harnett at 6 p.m. tonight.


Girls soccer
Triton 5, Overhills 1
Sophomore forward Morgan Goff netted four goals and fellow Lady Hawk Jessica Portillo scored one as Triton opened its season with a county victory at home Wednesday.
Triton plays at Harnett Central at 7 p.m. tonight. The Lady Jaguars will play again on March 7 at home versus Western Harnett.


Harnett Central 2, Western Harnett 0
In another opening-night Harnett County rivalry, the Lady Trojans shutout the Lady Eagles Wednesday in Lillington. Harnett Central hosts Triton at 6 p.m. tonight while Western Harnett hosts Douglas Byrd also at 6 p.m.

Union Pines 6, Westover 0
The Vikings singles lineup of Ben Williams, Dylan Dinkins, Cole Welton, Brenton Cameron, Vaughn Blakely and Cole Dumas each won both of their matches 6-0 versus their Wolverine opponents as the Vikings started the season with two Cape Fear Valley victories Wednesday.
The Vikings hosted Terry Sanford yesterday and will visit Lee County Monday for a 4:30 p.m. start.

Green Hope 18, Pinecrest 4
Green Hope rolled by the visiting Patriots in the season opener for both Wednesday night. Junior attack Zach Fradenburgh scored a hat trick for Pinecrest.
The Patriots host Athens Drive at 6 p.m. this evening.


Girls lacrosse
Green Hope 15, Pinecrest 5
Earlier Wednesday evening at Green Hope, the Lady Falcons defeated the Lady Patriots in the opener for both teams. Pinecrest plays at Heritage at 6 p.m. this evening.
