Led by senior Christian Wenger tossing a complete-game shutout, Southern Lee (2-0) took the lead in its first at-bats and turned the game into a rout later for a mercy-rule win at Northwood (0-1) Friday night.

The host Chargers were opening their campaign after going 24-7, winning the Carolina 12 Conference title and reaching the NCHSAA 2A state semifinals last season. This is Northwood's first year in the 3A Big Eight Conference.
The Cavaliers scored three runs in the top of the first. The score remained 3-0 until the Cavs struck for eight runs in the fifth to end the game after five innings.
The Cavaliers travel to Chatham County again Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start at Jordan-Matthews. The Cavs beat Jordan-Matthews 4-2 on Wednesday. Pitchers Maxx Taylor, Alex Bullard and Ryan Holmes teamed to hold the Jets to three hits.
