Wolverines get conference win at Southern

Boys basketball

Westover 51, Southern Lee 38

The Wolverines (7-1, 3-0) won a Cape Fear Valley game at Southern Lee (2-6, 1-1) Tuesday night. Westover jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first quarter.

Christian Locust led the Cavaliers with 10 points and Noah Mellette added eight points.

Jaiquan Manning led the Wolverines with 15 points.

Southern Lee will be in the Holiday in the Pines Tournament hosted by Pinecrest Dec. 27-29. Southern Lee will meet Heritage in the first round on Dec. 27 at 4 p.m.

In the JV game at Westover, the Cavaliers rolled to a 79-62 victory.


Gray's Creek 74, Union Pines 69

Deiontae McMillian led the Bears (6-3, 2-0) with 30 points as they won a Cape Fear Valley game at Union Pines Tuesday night. The Bears led 59-46 through three quarters.

Jeff Thompson led the Vikings with 20 points and Matthew Maness added 17 points.

Union Pines (3-7, 0-3) played Chapel Hill last night.

Gray's Creek won the JV game 63-48.

Overhills 63, Western Harnett 54

Overhills (5-4, 2-1) beat county rival Western Harnett (1-11, 0-3) in a Cape Fear Valley game in Lillington Tuesday night.

Jonathan Buie and Elliott Terry scored 11 points apiece to lead Western Harnett.

The Jaguars played at South Johnston last night. Western Harnett will be in the Lee County Basketball Shootout starting Dec. 27 with a game against Jordan at 6 p.m.

The Jaguars won the JV game over the Eagles, 72-60.


South Stanly 83, Chatham Central 80

The Rebel Bulls won a Yadkin Valley contest at Bear Creek despite junior Zack Burke scoring 30 points for the Bears.

Burke added 13 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Jeremy Kerr had 17 points and six rebounds. Scotty Polston added nine points.

Chatham Central (1-6, 1-3) will be in the Montgomery County Challenge Dec. 27-28.


Jordan-Matthews 68, Bartlett Yancey 33

The Jets (10-0, 2-0) remained perfect cruising to a 19-5 lead after a quarter and a 36-11 margin after a half over visiting Bartlett Yancey Tuesday night.

Llamar Snipes led the Jets with 22 points and ----- Scotten scored 12 points.

Jordan-Matthews will be in the Courier Tribune Christmas Tournament Dec. 27-29.


Triton 50, South Johnston 42

The Hawks (8-2, 2-0) got an Eastern Carolina on the road Tuesday night.

Senior point guard Isiah McNeill had 14 points and six steals for the Hawks. Alex Burnett had 10 points. Dedrick Stacker and Krishawn McBryde had seven points each.

The Hawks are off until playing in the Nathan Gay Holiday Tournament at Union Dec. 28-29.

In the JV game, the Hawks beat South Johnston 50-20.

West Montgomery 64, North Moore 58

The Warriors (4-4, 4-1) won a Yadkin Valley Conference game at North Moore Tuesday night.

Shyquarn Little, Cody McKenzie and Dreshuan Nicholson had 11 points each for the Warriors.

North Moore (4-6, 2-3) will host Faith Christian on Jan. 3.

Girls basketball

Cary 60, Lee County 48

The Lady Imps (4-7, 2-3) held a 23-22 edge at halftime before pulling away past Lee County in a Tri-Nine game Tuesday night.

Whitney Coleman led Cary with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior forward Sarah VanSteen led the Lady Jackets with eight points and five rebounds. De'Ja Bland had seven points and four steals. Allie Eyers had six points and nine rebounds. Quitta Wilson had six points and six assists.

Lee County (3-5, 0-4) will host Panther Creek tonight at 7 p.m.

Grace Christian 56, Faith Christian 48

The Lady Crusaders (13-2, 4-0) got out to a 32-22 lead by halftime and topped Faith Christian of Ramseur in a non-conference game Tuesday evening.

Junior Anna Murr totaled 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for Grace. Brooke Strickland had 14 points, seven steals, six assists and six rebounds while Alexis Ross had 14 points, nine boards and four assists.

The Lady Crusaders, with a 10-game winning streak going, are off until the new year and hosting Neuse Christian on Jan. 4.

Union Pines 53, Gray's Creek 36

After trailing, 10-5, through a quarter and being tied, 19-19, at halftime, the Lady Vikings beat Gray's Creek (2-6, 1-1) for a Cape Fear Valley win Tuesday night.

Freshman Stephanie Johnson led Union Pines (5-5, 2-1) with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Charlotte Holder had 10 points and nine rebounds. Lexie Coxe had five points, six steals and five assists.

The Lady Vikings hosted Chapel Hill last night.

Overhills 59, Western Harnett 55

The Lady Jaguars (5-4, 3-0) edged the Lady Eagles to stay unbeaten in the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tuesday at Western Harnett.

Overhills played at South Johnston last night and will travel to Pine Forest on Jan. 2.

The Lady Eagles (0-11, 0-3) are off until a game at Douglas Byrd on Jan. 4.

Triton 37, South Johnston 32

South Johnston won the third quarter 13-5, closing to within a 25-24 Lady Hawk lead, before the Lady Hawks (4-6, 1-1) hung on for an Eastern Carolina win.

Senior Keitora Smith led the Lady Hawks with seven points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Mallary Caroway had nine points, five assists and four rebounds.

Triton won the JV game 49-19 over South Johnston.

Jordan-Matthews 47, Bartlett Yancey 20

The Lady Jets (10-0, 2-0) rolled to a 27-7 lead by halftime and allowed no more than eight points in a period to visiting Bartlett Yancey Tuesday night.

Forward Taylor Paige led Jordan-Matthews with 13 points. Erin Bristow had 11 points and 14 rebounds and Odyssey Dunn had 10 points.

The Lady Jets are playing in the Courier Tribune Christmas Tournament Thursday-Saturday at Asheboro, starting with a first-round game versus Randleman Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

West Montgomery 60, North Moore 39

North Moore stayed within reach of the visiting Lady Warriors until West Montgomery (4-3, 4-1) won the last quarter 17-3.

Latoya Cuthrell led West Montgomery with 17 points and 23 rebounds.

The Lady Mustangs (6-4, 2-3) are off until Jan. 8 and a home game against East Montgomery.
