Overhills, W. Harnett split on the diamonds

Softball

Overhills 12, Western Harnett 6

The Lady Jaguars (1-1) trailed 6-5 going to the fifth inning before scoring three in the fifth and four more in the seventh for a win at Western Harnett (2-0) Friday night.

Overhills outhit the Lady Eagles 16-6. Kelsey White went 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBI for the Lady Jaguars. Riley Nunemaker went 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI. Megan Buse was 2 for 4 and scored three runs. Jordan Adcox added two doubles, two runs and one RBI.

Western Harnett will host Union Pines at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Overhills will go to Harnett Central Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. start.

 

Union Pines 8, Hoke County 7

With the Lady Vikings leading by a run going to the seventh inning, Hoke County (2-1) scored two runs to take the lead followed by Union Pines scoring two runs in the home half for a walk-off win in Cameron Friday.

Union Pines (1-0) will play at Western Harnett at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Asheboro 8, Chatham Central 4

Asheboro (1-0) got out to a lead with three runs in the first inning and topped the Lady Bears (0-1) Friday in Asheboro. Chatham Central scored three runs in the fifth to cut the Blue Comet lead to 6-4 but couldn't get closer.

The Lady Bears went 23-2 last season and were undefeated winning both Yadkin Valley Conference championships before reaching the NCHSAA 1A state semifinals.

Chatham Central will visit Southern Lee Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start.

 

Triton 18, Harnett Central 12

Harnett Central (0-1) got out to an 8-4 lead through two innings only for the Lady Hawks to roll up 11 runs in the third inning to turn the game around Friday in Angier. Triton (3-0) went on to lead by as much as 18-9 in the middle of the sixth inning.

Senior Alexis Hobson hit two home runs, totaling five RBI and three runs for the Lady Hawks who've scored 48 runs in their three wins in the season's first week.

Erica Occena went 4 for 4 with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Kayce Graves went 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI.

Triton will host Cape Fear at 7 p.m. Monday while Harnett Central will host Fuquay-Varina at 6 p.m. Monday.

 

North Moore 13, Jordan-Matthews 6

The Lady Mustangs romped to an opening win at Jordan-Matthews (1-1) Friday night. North Moore (1-0) will play at Pinecrest at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Jets will host West Montgomery at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Baseball

Wake Christian 12, Grace Christian 2

The Crusaders (0-1) fell in their season opener in a tournament at Wake Christian Friday.

Micah Welborn's two-run double tied the game, 2-2, in the third inning. Welborn, the Crusader starting pitcher, kept it 2-2 until Wake Christian plated four runs in the fifth. Eight Wake Christian runs were unearned on the day.

Grace Christian played in the tourney at Wake Christian yesterday. The Crusaders will host Pilot Mills at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

 

Western Harnett 12, Overhills 1

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of their home opener, then made it 12-0 through three innings against their county rival Friday night. Senior D.J. Locklear got the win on the mound for the Eagles.

Western Harnett (2-0) will host Union Pines, now a non-conference foe, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Overhills (0-2) will play at Harnett Central at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Asheboro 15, Union Pines 4

The Blue Comets (1-1) got their first win of the season in five innings Friday evening in Cameron. Union Pines (1-1) will play a non-conference game at Western Harnett (2-0) at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Triton 13, Harnett Central 8

Triton (3-0) made it three wins in three nights starting the season, topping the Trojans (0-1) in their opener Friday night in Erwin.

Triton will host Cape Fear at 7 p.m. Monday. Harnett Central will host Overhills at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

 

Girls soccer

Union Pines 0, Asheboro 0

The Lady Vikings managed to get eight shots on goal and a penalty kick in the first half, but couldn't break up a scoreless draw versus visiting Asheboro (0-0-1) Friday evening. The Lady Vikings (0-0-1) will open Cape Fear Valley Conference play hosting Douglas Byrd at 6 p.m. Monday.

 

Triton 5, Harnett Central 1

The Lady Hawks (2-0) scored their second county-rivalry win, both by 5-1 results, to begin the season Friday at Harnett Central (1-1).

Triton will host Cape Fear at 7 p.m. Monday. Harnett Central will host Broughton at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

 

Boys lacrosse

Athens Drive 14, Pinecrest 3

Athens Drive spoiled Pinecrest's home opener Friday evening. The Patriots (0-2) travel to Cary Tuesday to face Middle Creek at 6:30 p.m.

 

Carrboro 9, Northwood 3

The Jaguars (1-0) rolled by Northwood (0-1) in a season opener in Pittsboro Friday night. Charger goalkeeper Eric Franklin made 13 saves.

Northwood will play at Roxboro Community at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Pinecrest 18, Heritage 11

The Lady Patriots (1-1) got their first win of the season on the road in Wake Forest Friday. Pinecrest will host Middle Creek at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

North Moore 6, Union Academy 3

The Mustangs (2-0, 2-0) started their tennis season with a win at home Wednesday over the Rebel Bulls, then a win at Union Academy Thursday afternoon.

North Moore will host East Montgomery for a Yadkin Valley match at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
