Cavs, Vikings, Eagles advance in CFVC baseball tourney

Southern Lee 12, Westover 2

The No. 2-seeded Cavaliers (20-5) rolled past No. 7 Westover (0-18) in the first round of the Cape Fear Valley Conference Tournament at Southern Lee Thursday night.

Ryan Holmes pitched 4.1 shutout innings and got the win. Christian Wenger went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI. Trei Chalmers went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Southern Lee played No. 3 Union Pines in the tourney semifinals last night at Western Harnett. Western Harnett will host the CFVC final Monday at 7 p.m.

Holly Springs 5, Lee County 4

Lee County (9-13, 6-9) was edged at Holly Springs (17-5, 9-5) in a Tri-Nine game Thursday. The Yellow Jackets remain tied with Apex for fifth place in the conference. Apex had its regular-season finale slated for last night.

Lee County will host Fuquay-Varina in a make-up game on Monday at 7 p.m.

Union Pines 6, Douglas Byrd 1

The No. 3-seeded Vikings advanced through the first round of the CFVC Tournament, pulling away from the No. 6 Eagles with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, in Cameron Thursday night.

Jeffrey Thompson got the win, going a complete game, while going 2-for-4 with two RBI at the plate.

Emmitt Carden went 3-for-4 with three runs, a double and an RBI. Dalton Garner had two hits and two RBI.

The Vikings played Southern Lee last night.

Western Harnett 12, Overhills 6

No. 4 Western Harnett made three wins in three contests over Overhills (6-15) in the CFVC Tournament Thursday night in Lillington. The Eagles (9-11) advanced to face No. 1 Gray's Creek last night.

Northwood 7, South Granville 1

Northwood 9, South Granville 5

The Chargers (18-5, 14-1) got a Carolina 12 sweep over the Vikings (13-8, 10-4) Thursday in Pittsboro. Northwood finished its regular season last night at Granville Central.


Holly Springs 8, Lee County 0

The Lady Yellow Jackets (6-15, 4-12) finished their season and, at least through the 2017 season, played their final Tri-Nine game Thursday evening.

Lee County had its Senior Night for four seniors: Asia Williams, Allie Eyers, Nikki Hoover and Jade Womble.

Gray's Creek 11, Southern Lee 5

The No. 3-seeded Lady Bears (16-6) topped Southern Lee (4-15) for the second time in two nights, this time in the first round of the CFVC Tournament, on Thursday night. Gray's Creek held a 5-4 lead in the middle of the third before pulling away. Gray's Creek played No. 2 Western Harnett last night in the CFVC semis.

Overhills 2, Douglas Byrd 1

No. 5 Overhills (5-15) defeated No. 4 Douglas Byrd for the first time this season in the first round of the CFVC Tournament Thursday night.

Overhills played No. 1 Union Pines last night. The CFVC final is set for Monday night at Western Harnett.

South Johnston 7, Triton 2

No. 2-seeded South Johnston (17-6) bounced No. 3 Triton (14-6) from the semifinals of the Eastern Carolina Conference Tournament Thursday night.

Triton will host South View in a make-up, regular season game on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

West Johnston 13, Harnett Central 3

Harnett Central (8-9, 5-7) fell in a Greater Neuse River game at West Johnston Thursday night. The Lady Trojans played Knightdale last night and will play at Garner on Monday at 7 p.m.
