West Wilkes defeated Chatham Central 2-1 in game two of the NCHSAA 1A state softball semifinals to win the best-of-three semifinal series and the West Region championship Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Blackhawks (25-3) handed Chatham Central (26-2) its only losses of the season. West Wilkes won game one, also 2-1, in Bear Creek Friday night.
In game two, West Wilkes broke through for two runs in the home half of the fifth inning.
Antonia Nelson hit a solo home run for the Lady Bears in the top of the sixth. That was all the offense Chatham Central managed against West Wilkes pitcher Courtney Lackey.
After pitcher Emily Visnic kept the Lady Bears at bay Friday evening, Lackey pitched a three-hitter.
Cayley Oldham went 2-for-3 with a single and a double for the Lady Bears. Kelsey Hayes pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and striking out five.
The semifinal series was a match-up of the Mountain Valley Conference champs and the Yadkin Valley Conference champs. The Lady Bears spent most of the season ranked first in the N.C. State Coaches Association 1A state poll.
West Wilkes will meet East Region champion South Creek in the championship series Friday-Saturday in Raleigh.
