Cardinal Gibbons downs Northwood in battle for third place
Cardinal Gibbons scored the last 34 points of the game to beat Northwood 55-14 in a battle for third place in 3A Conference 11.
Cardinal Gibbons (8-3, 5-2) and Northwood (8-3, 4-3) entered the final week of the regular season tied for third and were playing for playoff positioning. The Crusaders made a statement with their highest point total of the season while holding the Chargers to their lowest.
Shawn Stankavage threw for seven touchdowns and ran for another for Cardinal Gibbons. Stankavage completed nine straight passes in the second quarter before spiking the ball to stop the clock before the half. He finished 29-of-40 for 440 yards
Stankavage led a lightning-fast Cardinal Gibbons offense. The Crusaders scored in a 74-yard, 84-second drive just before halftime, and Stankavage moved the Crusaders 92 yards on three passes in a third-quarter touchdown drive.
Two Crusader receivers topped 100 yards. Dante DiMaggio caught seven passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half. Chris Gorman had 11 catches for 111 yards and three scores. Stankavage also threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to running back Peyton Offnick and a 64-yard score to Brandon Loy on back-to-back possessions in the third quarter. Loy just missed the century mark, catching five passes for 98 yards.
Northwood running back Kadarus Rone was the lone bright spot, gaining 197 yards on 27 carries and rushing for both of Northwood’s touchdowns.
The Cardinal Gibbons defense harassed Northwood quarterback Ti Pinnix into a 14-of-30, 87-yard performance and held standout receiver Jalen Smith to just 51 yards. The Crusaders also forced three turnovers on a pair of interceptions and a fumble recovery, leading to 14 points.
