Patriots edge Laney, 13-7, will host 2nd round game

Pinecrest 13, Laney 7

The Patriots (11-1) took the lead early in the fourth quarter, then held Laney (6-5) on downs inside the 10-yard line, to advance through the first round of the NCHSAA 4AA State Playoffs Friday night in Southern Pines. Pinecrest, No. 4 seed in the 4AA East Region, has its first-ever 11-win season and will host No. 12 Wake Forest (9-3) in the second round.

Sophomore quarterback Christian Ledbetter carried for an 8-yard tying touchdown in the second quarter and the score remained 7-7 until Ledbetter scored on a 2-yard run with 10 minutes left in the game.

On the ensuing drive, Laney drove as far as the Patriot 9-yard line before Pinecrest held on downs. The Patriots held the ball for the last three minutes to win.

Douglas Byrd 53, Western Harnett 15

Top-seeded (3AA East) Douglas Byrd rolled to a first-round win over No. 16 Western Harnett (4-8) Friday night in Fayetteville.

Sophomore quarterback Austin Speck ran for a 43-yard touchdown to match an opening Douglas Byrd touchdown and make it 7-7 in the first quarter. The home side went on to tally the next 46 points.

Alonzo Hurtado had two touchdowns passes, a touchdown run and a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown for Douglas Byrd.

Speck had 10 carries for 57 yards and Darius Alston had 14 carries for 40 yards for Western Harnett.


Eastern Alamance 56, Northwood 21

No. 7 (3A East) Eastern Alamance raced out to a 35-0 lead by halftime and trounced No. 10 Northwood in Mebane Friday night.

Running back Malcolm Summers had two rushing touchdowns and a 73-yard touchdown reception for the Eagles (9-3).

Junior quarterback Ti Pinnix ran for two touchdowns for the Chargers (8-4).


Southwest Onslow 37, Jordan-Matthews 21

No. 11 Jordan-Matthews jumped out to a 14-0 lead at No. 6 Southwest Onslow (9-3) before the hosts rallied in the second half to advance through the 2A first round.

Southwest Onslow trailed 14-8 at halftime before winning the third period 22-0. The Stallions took advantage of five Jet turnovers on the night.

Trajan Glover's 2-yard touchdown run gave the Jets a two-touchdown lead early in the second quarter. Hunter Causey had 18 carries for 51 yards and Cyrus Scotton had four catches for 45 yards for the Jets.

The Jets (5-7) won three of their last four games to end the season.

Albemarle 63, Chatham Central 0

Top-seeded (1A Midwest) Albemarle (9-3) routed No. 8 Chatham Central (2-10) for the second time this season in the first round of the state playoffs Friday night. Albemarle led 56-0 at halftime.

Albemarle's Larry Stanback had eight carries for 68 yards and four touchdowns and Timmie White caught three passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.


West Montgomery 56, North Moore 16

No. 1 (1AA Midwest) West Montgomery (11-1) defeated No. 8 North Moore (2-10) for the second time this season in the first round of the state playoffs Friday night. The conference game was a 56-14 Warrior win.


Cardinal Gibbons 44, Triton 28

Cardinal Gibbons quarterback Shawn Stankavage accounted for 429 total yards and six touchdowns as the No. 10 Crusaders (9-3) won a 3AA first-round game at No. 7 Triton (9-3) Friday night.

The Crusaders got out to a 31-0 lead. Stankavage was 27-for-42 passing for 297 yards and five touchdowns. He rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown.

Triton quarterback Jeremy Leggett was 10-for-22 passing for 140 yards and two touchdowns and had a rushing touchdown. Zach Wade was the leading Hawk rusher with 10 carries for 50 yards.
