Providence Grove gets Jackets in the seventh

Providence Grove 6, Lee County 5

After Lee County rallied back from a 5-1 deficit with two innings to play, Providence Grove (7-5) scored a run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to win in the Asheboro Copperheads Classic at McCrary Park on Wednesday night.

The Yellow Jackets (5-8, 3-5) scored twice in the sixth and twice in the seventh to tie the game. The Jackets finished their Asheboro trip 2-1.

Lee County will return to Tri-Nine Conference play at Fuquay-Varina Tuesday at 7 p.m.


Northwood 3, Franklin Academy 1

The Chargers (11-2, 7-0) scored two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to keep their perfect Carolina 12 record at Franklin Academy (5-4, 3-2) Wednesday night.

Robert Straughn got the win for the Chargers. Franklin Academy took the lead in the first and didn't score again.

Northwood hosts Jordan-Matthews tonight at 7 p.m.


Union Pines 16, O'Neal 0

The Vikings (9-2) rolled past their county neighbor Falcons (0-4) in the first round of the Chatlee Easter Invitational in Cameron Wednesday evening.

The Vikings scored eight runs in the second, taking a 10-0 lead, and went on to finish the game in five frames. The Vikings held O'Neal to one hit.

Union Pines, a co-host of the tournament, will play a semifinal game tonight at 7 p.m. Union Pines is slated to host four games on Saturday starting at 10 a.m.

Union Pines (9-0, 8-0) won at county rival Pinecrest Wednesday. With two victories apiece, Matt Lorenz took his career record to 76-10, Jordan Allen improved to 51-6 and Dylan Dinkins went to 51-3. The Vikings are ranked fourth in the state in the N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association 3A Poll. Union Pines travels to play Asheboro today at 4:30 p.m.
