Patriots stay perfect in SEC opener
Pinecrest 52, Lumberton 28
Sophomore quarterback Christian Ledbetter passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two touchdowns as Pinecrest (7-0, 1-0) won its Southeastern Conference opener at Lumberton Friday night.
The Patriots rolled past the Pirates (0-7, 0-1) even as Lumberton’s Gilbert Huggins scored two touchdowns on 99-yard kickoff returns.
Troy Roper scored the first two Patriot touchdowns, carrying for a 5-yard touchdown to give Pinecrest the lead, then catching a 7-yard pass from Ledbetter to put the Patriots ahead again following Huggins’ first big kickoff return.
Ledbetter kept the ball himself for the next two Patriot touchdowns and a 28-7 lead. Ledbetter finished going 10-for-11 passing for 101 yards and no interceptions.
Josh McCoy powered the Patriots with 21 carries for 231 yards and a touchdown. Roper had 11 carries for 57 yards and four receptions for 38 yards.
Pinecrest will have an SEC showdown at Scotland at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Fighting Scots (7-0, 1-0) blanked Purnell Swett 48-0 Friday night.
Northwood 33, J.F. Webb 21
The Chargers (6-1, 2-1) celebrated homecoming in Pittsboro with a Big Eight victory Friday night.
Junior running back Kadarus Rone led the Charger offense with 19 rushes for 149 yards and two touchdowns. A Rone touchdown run opened the scoring 1:45 into the game.
Senior Kenton Edwards had the key play of the night. After J.F. Webb (2-5, 0-3) took the lead late in the third quarter, Edwards returned a kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown giving the Chargers a 26-21 lead.
Charger quarterback Ti Pinnix went 12-for-35 passing for 138 yards and two interceptions. He rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown. Jalen Smith caught five passes for 71 yards. Jonathan Pena made two of three field goal tries for the Chargers.
Northwood travels to face Southern Durham at 7 p.m. Friday.
Triton 63, South Johnston 21
The Hawks (6-1, 1-0) used their Two Rivers Conference opener, coming off a bye week, to bounce back in a major way from their first loss of the season two weeks ago at Rocky Mount.
Triton led visiting South Johnston (1-6, 0-1) 42-21 at halftime.
De’Angelo Harris led the Hawk running game with 10 carries for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Zach Wade carried 12 times for 102 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Richardson, Malcolm Smith and Devontae Stewart also ran for a touchdown each.
Jeremy Leggett passed for 100 yards, including a 21-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Webb and a 17-yard touchdown pass to Todd Penny.
The Hawks will play a Two Rivers game at Cleveland (4-3, 1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Knightdale 40, Harnett Central 7
Knightdale (6-1, 3-0) overpowered the Trojans with 311 rushing yards in a Greater Neuse River game Friday night in Angier.

Trojan senior Jalynn Bass took a kickoff return 97 yards for a touchdown, making the Knightdale lead 14-7.
Harnett Central (1-6, 0-3) will travel to face Garner at 7 p.m. Friday.
Reidsville 34, Jordan-Matthews 7
The host Rams (5-2, 1-0) sent the Jets (2-5, 0-1) to their fifth straight loss in the Mid-State Conference opener for both sides Friday night. Reidsville led 28-0 at halftime.
Jordan-Matthews hits the road again this Friday, playing at Graham at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Union Academy 55, North Moore 6
A week after a 41-0 win over South Davidson, the Mustangs (1-7, 1-4) were blown out by Union Academy (4-3, 3-2) in Monroe.
The Mustangs will continue in Yadkin Valley play at Albemarle at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
