Area scores: Lady Vikings stay perfect in CFVC hoops

Union Pines 65, Gray's Creek 39

The Lady Vikings (14-2, 6-0) remained atop the Cape Fear Valley Conference, by a game and a half over Westover, with an easy win in Cameron Friday night. Union Pines led 14-11 after one period before pulling away to a 50-21 lead through three quarters over the Lady Bears (6-10, 2-3).

Center Stephanie Johnson had a double-double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and two blocks. Nyona Shields had 12 points and four steals. Tiffany Hicks had eight points and 12 rebounds and Samantha Ring added eight points as well.

The Lady Vikings have won six straight games. Union Pines will host Western Harnett in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The JV Lady Vikings defeated Gray's Creek 51-8 on Friday.

Westover 59, Lee County 42

Westover (7-9, 4-1) topped visiting Lee County (5-11, 1-4) in a CFVC game Friday night.

Nekyia Baptiste led the Lady Wolverines with 16 points, including three three-pointers. Westover led 26-16 at halftime.

Sophomore guard Shantel Bennett led the Lady Yellow Jackets with 20 points. Forward Maritza Santos added seven points.

Lee County will play at Southern Lee at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Lady Jackets beat the Lady Cavaliers 51-33 in a non-CFVC game on Dec. 30.

Grace Christian 65, Trinity Academy 38

Sophomore Alexis Ross posted 23 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals leading the Lady Crusaders (17-2, 6-1) to a Carolina Christian Conference win at Trinity Academy (6-10, 4-4) Friday evening.

Karinda Farrant had 18 points, nine steals and seven rebounds. Anna Murr had 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Grace Christian led 35-16 at halftime.

The Lady Crusaders will host Cape Fear Christian in a CCC game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Northwood 57, Northern Vance 34

The Lady Chargers (10-4, 2-3) won a Big Eight game on the road Friday night. Kristian Eanes led Northwood with 17 points while Bryn Aydt and Jazanae Billings scored nine points each.

Northwood played at Jordan-Matthews last night and will host Southern Durham for a Big Eight game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Jordan-Matthews 50, Carrboro 41

The Lady Jets trailed 13-7 after a quarter before going on to a Mid-State Conference win at Carrboro Friday night. Jordan-Matthews (5-9, 2-1) came back to take a 27-24 lead at halftime.

Madison Poe led the Lady Jets with 20 points. Odyssey Dunn had 11 points and Bethany Pyrtle added eight points.

Jordan-Matthews played Northwood last night and will host Bartlett Yancey at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

South Johnston 52, Western Harnett 39

South Johnston topped the Lady Eagles in a Two Rivers game Friday night.

Geena Bryant and Meredith Randolph scored 12 points each for the Lady Eagles. Alexis Massengill had 17 points and 23 rebounds for South Johnston.

Western Harnett (1-12, 1-2) will play at Union Pines at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

E.E. Smith 64, Overhills 30

E.E. Smith (12-3, 4-1) rolled to a Mid-South Athletic win Friday night. Alecia Hardy led the victors with 22 points.

Janna Aultman led the Lady Jaguars with 13 points. Overhills (7-4, 1-4) will host Jack Britt for a conference game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Harnett Central 46, West Johnston 37

The Lady Trojans (7-7, 2-3) beat West Johnston (7-7, 1-5) in a Greater Neuse River game in Angier Friday night.

Deijah McNeill led the Lady Trojans with 12 points. Taylor Snow had 11 points and Madison Turlington had nine points.

Harnett Central will play at Garner at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Triton 49, Smithfield-Selma 48

Triton (5-10, 1-2) edged Smithfield-Selma for a Two Rivers Conference win Friday night.

Jamecia McNair led the Lady Hawks with 10 points. Kadizah Gaulden had nine points. Brittany Smith had 14 rebounds for the Lady Hawks.

Triton will host Western Harnett for a Two Rivers game at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Gray Stone Day 72, North Moore 63

The Lady Mustangs (4-9, 2-5) fell in a Yadkin Valley game at Gray Stone Day (8-6, 4-1) Friday night. North Moore led 30-28 at halftime.

North Moore will play at Chatham Central at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Pinecrest 53, Purnell Swett 35

The Lady Patriots (4-9, 1-2) won at home Friday night for their first Southeastern Conference win of the season. Pinecrest will host Richmond at 6 p.m. Friday.

Cape Fear Christian 56, Community Christian 31

The Lady Eagles (7-4, 6-2) rolled to a CCC win in Wilson Friday evening. Cape Fear Christian will play at Grace Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Westover 58, Lee County 39

The Wolverines (11-4, 4-1) made seven three-pointers on the night and beat the visiting Yellow Jackets (13-3, 3-2), dropping Lee County to fourth place in the Cape Fear Valley, Friday night in Fayetteville.

Dewaun McEachin led the Jackets with 14 points. Jerry Pullum had 12 points and Hunter Jackson had seven points.

Lee County will play at Southern Lee, for the first cross-county rivalry game of the season, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Union Pines 56, Gray's Creek 41

Malik Crawford scored 20 points to lead the Vikings to a Cape Fear Valley win over the visiting Bears Friday night.

In the post for the Vikings, Luke Davis scored 12 points and Darrin Carlyle scored 10 points.

Union Pines (8-8, 2-4) will face Hoke County during a tripleheader at Sandhills Community College on Monday.

Grace Christian 54, Trinity Academy 44

The Crusaders (9-10, 5-3) won at Trinity Academy of Raleigh (7-10, 4-5) Friday night led by Zach Boggs pouring in 29 points. Grace Christian has won three straight Carolina Christian Conference contests.

William Kerr had 12 points for the Crusaders with Braxton Diekhopf scoring six and Robert Fulton adding five.

The Crusaders will host Cape Fear Christian for a CCC game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Queens Grant 60, Chatham Central 52

The Bears (6-7, 3-3) fell to Queens Grant (7-7, 4-2) in a Yadkin Valley Conference game Friday night. Duane Goodman led the Stallions with 21 points.

Chatham Central will host North Moore at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Carrboro 65, Jordan-Matthews 58

The host Jaguars (10-5, 2-1) pulled away with a 22-9 third quarter, building a 48-33 lead, then held off a Jet rally attempt for a Mid-State Conference win Friday night.

Jaleel Dunn led the Jets with 17 points. Bryson Bittle and Raheem Mateen scored 10 points each.

Jordan-Matthews (7-7, 1-2) played Northwood last night and will host Bartlett Yancey for a conference game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

South Johnston 51, Western Harnett 47

South Johnston (8-7, 1-2) handed the Eagles (2-14, 2-1) their first conference loss, dropping the Eagles into a three-way tie for first in the Two Rivers Conference, on Friday night.

Alan Johnson scored 13 points for South Johnston. Jalen Branch scored 21 points and Jonathan Buie added 10 for Western Harnett.

The Eagles will visit Union Pines Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

Triton 56, Smithfield-Selma 50

The Hawks (10-5, 2-1) pulled out a Two Rivers game against the Spartans (4-12, 1-2) at home Friday night.

Nick Parker led Triton with 18 points. Dequill Avery had 14 points and D'Angelo Harris had 12 points, eight assists, seven steals and six rebounds. Triton rallied from a 27-19 halftime deficit to win.

The Hawks will host Western Harnett at 8 p.m. Friday.

E.E. Smith 69, Overhills 52

E.E. Smith (14-2, 4-1) cruised past the Jaguars in a Mid-South Athletic game in Fayetteville Friday night.

Dexter McCrae led the Jaguars with 16 points. Overhills (8-6, 2-3) will host Jack Britt at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

West Johnston 65, Harnett Central 60 - OT

West Johnston (5-10, 2-5) won the fourth quarter 19-15, then the overtime period 9-4, to win at Harnett Central (5-9, 1-4) Friday night.

The Trojans will continue GNRC play at Garner at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

North Moore 65, Gray Stone Day 40

North Moore held a four-point lead at halftime before winning the third period 25-8, taking a 48-27 lead, for a YVC victory to stay perfect in the conference in Misenheimer Friday night. The Mustangs (9-5, 6-0) will play Bunn at Sandhills Community College on Monday.

Harrells Christian 59, O'Neal 40

Harrells Christian beat the Falcons in a Cape Fear Independent Conference game at O'Neal Friday night. The Falcons (3-11, 0-4) will play at Fayetteville Christian at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Pinecrest 64, Purnell Swett 49

The Patriots got their first Southeastern Conference win of the season Friday night in Southern Pines.

Kardashian Ragin led the Patriots with 20 points. Stephon Stephens added 11 points. Pinecrest (4-10, 1-2) led the Rams (3-8, 1-1) 32-21 at halftime.

Pinecrest will play Concord at Sandhills Community College on Monday.

Community Christian 82, Cape Fear Christian 57

Cape Fear Christian (2-10, 2-6) fell in a Carolina Christian Conference game in Wilson Friday night. The Eagles will play at Grace Christian at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
