Green Hope ends Yellow Jacket season in states

Boys basketball

Green Hope 61, Lee County 44

Host and No. 4 seed Green Hope (22-5) jumped out to a 19-2 lead after one quarter and went on to its third win in three meetings with Lee County this season in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A State Tournament Monday night.

Senior guard Dante Graham led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points. Dewaun McEachin scored 11 points and Jason Payne scored nine points.

Lee County finishes the season 13-14 overall and fourth in the Tri-Nine after finishing eighth in the league last season.

Northwood 72, Warren 56

No. 8 Northwood (17-10) cruised past visiting Warren (17-9) in the first round of the 2A State Tournament Monday night.

Aumad Walker led the Chargers with 19 points. Kadarus Rone scored 18 points and Jared Worley added 11 points.

The Chargers advance to play at top-seeded Kinston tonight at 8 p.m.

Middle Creek 60, Pinecrest 54

Middle Creek held on to a 33-22 halftime lead and beat the visiting Patriots in the first round of the 4A State Tournament. Quentin Jackson led the Mustangs (19-8) with 18 points.

Frankie Painter and Adam Cummings scored 14 points each for Pinecrest, which finishes the season 15-10.

Morehead 66, Overhills 52

Visiting Morehead (16-8) beat Overhills in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Monday night in Spring Lake.

The Jaguars finish the season 17-9 overall.

Triton 54, Northern Nash 52

No. 2 Triton (23-3) edged visiting No. 15 Northern Nash (8-14) in the 3A first round Monday night.

Maurice McBryde led the Hawks with 17 points and Krishawn McBryde added 13 points.

Triton hosts No. 7 Havelock in the second round tonight at 7 p.m.

Cummings 59, Jordan-Matthews 41

Cummings (21-4) made it 4-0 over the Jets this season in the first round of the 2A State Tournament Monday night.

Nigel White led the Jets with 10 points and Jackson Rogers added seven points.

Jordan-Matthews finishes the season 19-8.

Winston-Salem Prep 100, Chatham Central 37

Top-seeded Winston-Salem Prep (27-2) broke out to a 20-3 lead through one quarter and kept going over the No. 16 Bears in a 1A first round game.

Junior Zack Burke led Chatham Central with 13 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Matt Clark scored 11 points.

The Bears finish the season 7-16.

North Moore 74, Central Academy 65 - OT

The No. 9 Mustangs prevailed on the road at No. 8 Central Academy (9-16) in Union County Monday night in a 1A first round game. North Moore won the overtime period 16-7.

North Moore (14-10) advances to play at Winston-Salem Prep tonight at 7 p.m.

Girls basketball

Triton 46, Southern Lee 26

No. 7 Triton defeated the No. 10 Lady Cavaliers in the first round of the NCHSAA 3A State Tournament Monday night.

Rachel Wilson led the Lady Cavs with eight points and five rebounds. Deshele Sumpter had six points, five rebounds and four steals. Brianna Taylor had five points, 12 rebounds and six steals.

Octavia Hart led the Lady Hawks (14-13) with nine points and five assists while Adaisha Harris had eight points and 12 boards.

Southern Lee finishes its season 13-13 overall.

Triton plays at No. 2 Chapel Hill in the second round tonight at 6:30 p.m.

Overhills 46, Union Pines 29

Sophomore Ge'Naisha Robinson led Overhills (18-6) with 16 points, eight rebounds and five steals as the Lady Jaguars advanced past conference rival Union Pines in the 3A first round Monday night.

Katelyn Clark added eight points and five rebounds for the Lady Jaguars.

Tiffany Hicks led the Lady Vikings with eight points and five boards. Union Pines finishes the season 12-13.

No. 3 Overhills hosts Southern Guilford in a second round game tonight at 7 p.m.

Northwood 55, Greene Central 27

The No. 2 Lady Chargers (23-4) rolled through the first round of the 2A State Tournament Monday night in Pittsboro.

Alexis Brower and Shontai Totten scored 13 points apiece for the Lady Chargers and Jasmine Harris scored 12 points. Northwood led 26-10 at halftime.

Northwood hosts No. 7 Cedar Ridge in the second round tonight at 7 p.m.

Jordan-Matthews 83, Clinton 53

Senior Mylia Garner poured in 32 points and the Lady Jets, the defending 2A state champs, advanced through the 2A first round over visiting Clinton Monday night.

Senior Taylor Paige added 17 points for the Lady Jets (24-4).

No. 5 Jordan-Matthews hosts No. 13 Cummings tonight at 7 p.m.

Bishop McGuinness 59, Chatham Central 21

Bishop McGuinness (19-7) jumped out to a 41-10 lead by halftime and knocked the Lady Bears out of the 1A State Tournament Monday night.

Chatham Central finishes the season 11-14 overall.

Lake Norman Charter 76, North Moore 44

Lake Norman Charter (22-5) pulled away from visiting North Moore in the second period, making a 21-18 lead after one period a 48-27 halftime margin, in a 1A first round game Monday night.

The Lady Mustangs finish the season 13-12 overall.

Apex 50, Pinecrest 42

No. 9 Apex (18-9) advanced past No. 8 Pinecrest in a 4A first round game in Southern Pines Monday night.

Janea Williams led the Lady Patriots with 15 points and Felicia Painter added 14 points.

The Lady Patriots finish the season 16-10.

Harnett Central 61, East Wake 58

After going 0-3 versus East Wake so far this season, including a 55-37 loss in a conference tournament semifinal last week, Harnett Central (21-5) won a 4A first round game at East Wake Monday night.

DeAnneisha Jackson led Harnett Central with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Maya Banks scored 19 points.

The Lady Trojans advance to play at No. 1 Southeast Raleigh tonight at 7 p.m.
