UNC announces retirement of assistant Joe Holladay
North Carolina says longtime assistant basketball coach Joe Holladay is retiring and is bringing back former player Brad Frederick to replace him.
UNC officials said Monday that Frederick is taking over for Holladay as director of basketball operations.
The 65-year-old Holladay spent 20 years on Roy Williams' staffs at Kansas and North Carolina and came with him to Chapel Hill in 2003. He was a part of five Final Fours — three with North Carolina — and the Tar Heels' two most recent national championships in 2005 and '09.
Frederick was a member of two Final Four teams in three seasons with the Tar Heels from 1996-99. He has been on Vanderbilt's staff since 2000 and was the longest-tenured assistant in the Southeastern Conference.
