Campbell blasts way to doubleheader sweep
Junior first baseman Raven Lee connected on three home runs and Campbell totaled seven long balls in a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina Central, 14-2 in five innings and 7-1, on Monday night at CU's Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.
The Camels pounded out 20 hits led by Lee with four, who drove in nine RBI on the night. Sophomore third baseman Brittany Bruce and junior designated player Olivia Scarborough had three hits each.
Scarborough, Sarah Forgacs, Jordan Clarke and Shaela Churchill hit one homer each for the Camels (20-11).
Lee moved into fourth on the Camels' all-time list with 28 homers passing Lauren Stephan (2008-11). The Battleboro native hit two over the fence in game one including a grand slam off the right field foul pole to tie a single-game career-high with six RBI.
In the first contest, freshman pitcher Courtney Roberts egistered a complete-game victory to improve to 9-3 on the campaign.
Game two starter senior Brittany Arnn recorded eight strikeouts and did not allow an earned run in picking up her fourth win of the season.
The Camel offense exploded for 11 runs in the second inning of game one. Clarke hit a two-run homer with Lee's grand slam and a two-run homer by Churchill coming in the onslaught.
Game two was a tight 1-1 battle until the Campbell fifth inning. Campbell started a two-out rally with Broadway's Kerstine Womack being hit by pitch and tallied six runs on four hits to take a 7-1 advantage.
Lee, with a three-run shot, and Scarborough registered the first back-to-back home runs for the Camels since Forgacs and Christina Melton accomplished the feat on May 10, 2012 vs. Winthrop. Capping the scoring in the frame was Forgacs, setting a new personal-best with her third homer of the season.
Campbell continues a seven-game homestand on Wednesday as it hosts North Carolina at 6 p.m. at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium. The Camels resume Big South play on Friday against Liberty with a doubleheader set for 4 p.m.
