Hoosier shoots 65 to lead North and South
Hoosier underclassman Will Seger tallied six birdies in his last 12 holes finishing with a 6-under-par 65 in the opening round of the 114th Men's North and South Amateur Championship Tuesday at Pinehurst No. 8.
Seger leads two golfers - McCormick Clouser of Bluffton, Ind. and Rico Hoey of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., by three strokes with two rounds of stroke play to go - today and Thursday. After Thursday's round, the top 16 golfers will advance to the match play portion of the tournament set for Friday and Saturday. Pinehurst No. 8 is hosting all rounds of what is the longest consecutive running amateur golf championship in the country.
After a bogey on the par-five No. 6 to drop to even par, Seger birdied the next three holes and Nos. 12, 14 and 17.
Seger is a rising sophomore at Indiana University. He finished tied for 53rd in the Big Ten Championships in May.
Clouser, a rising senior at Ball State University, carded 15 pars and three birdies; on No. 17, then on Nos. 5 and 9 on his second nine.
Hoey, a rising sophomore at the University of Southern California, was 1-over par through 10 holes before rolling off birdies on Nos. 11, 14, 16 and 17 for a 3-under 32 back nine.
Taylor Pendrith, of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada and the No. 3-ranked amateur in the world according to Golfweek, made a double-eagle two on the 604-yard par-five No. 6. Pendrith finished with a 2-over 73 and is tied for 31st.
Ashton Van Horne, of Georgetown, Ky. and Belmont University, and Chelso Barrett, of Surry, N.H. and Texas Christian University, shot 2-under 69s.
Defending champion Andrew Dorn, who played in the U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 in June, shot 1-over 72.
Cary's Michael Cromie, a recent University of Georgia graduate and the 2007 North and South Junior champion, shot even-par 71.
