Grossfuss plays on victorious N.C. all-star team
Before going from a Lee County Yellow Jacket to a Lynchburg Hornet, Ben Grossfuss played one last high school soccer match last Saturday.
As one of the top seniors in North Carolina, Grossfuss represented N.C. in the seventh Clash of the Carolinas all-star game at Blackbaud Stadium, home of USL Pro franchise Charleston Battery. Grossfuss became the first Lee County soccer standout to play in a Clash of the Carolinas match.
North Carolina defeated South Carolina 2-0, with both tallies coming in the last 16 minutes of the match. Ashley High defender Gary O'Neill scored off a free kick in the 65th minute and Jacksonville midfielder Aaron Sparks scored in the 78th minute. North Carolina has three straight victories versus South Carolina.
The Clash of the Carolina's is the only state vs. state high school all-star match in the country.
The North Carolina squad was selected by the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association from a pool of the 2012 NCSCA All-State seniors. Co-coaches for the N.C. team were Tim Healy from Cardinal Gibbons and Brent Walston from Corinth Holders.
Grossfuss was all-state along with being the Tri-Nine Conference Player of the Year and an All-South Region player by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He scored 29 goals as a junior and 23 goals in his senior season as a Yellow Jacket.
Grossfuss will be attending Lynchburg College in the fall. He's a member of the National Honor Society and DECA Key. Along with the soccer honors, Grossfuss was a Yellow Jacket baseball player and all-conference placekicker for Lee County football.
