The Campbell women’s basketball team fell at Longwood, 77-75, on Thursday night as Crystal Smith converted a layup with 2.8 seconds remaining and posted a game-high 32 points.

Senior guard Tonisha Baker had a three-point attempt from half court fall just short at the buzzer for CU.

The leading scorers for Campbell (12-5, 4-2) were junior guard Monique Spry and Baker with 20 points each.

Sophomore forward Kiera Gaines played a vital role for the Lady Camels as she recorded her third double-double of the season with a personal-best 15 rebounds and 11 points.

Campbell compiled a 45.8 shooting percentage and made 8-of-13 three-point field goals but was unable to get a much-needed stop to force overtime. Longwood tallied a similar 45.2 rate from the field as 17 points off 20 Lady Camel turnovers helped fuel its transition game.

Bench scoring for the Lady Camels came from freshman RaeChaun Edwards and junior Roslyn Presley with each registering seven points.

To open the contest, both teams were sloppy with the basketball equating to 10 turnovers in the first five minutes. Edwards came in and provided a spark with seven points including a trey as the Lady Camels went on an 11-3 run.

That was the largest lead of the game, 19-9, with 9:18 remaining, but Longwood continued to put pressure on the ball and cut the advantage to four, 28-24, with 5:50 remaining.

Campbell used field goals by Spry and Baker to push the lead back to eight. The Lancers closed the frame on a 10-3 run to bring the score just about even at 35-34.

Spry was the Lady Camels' leading scorer with 12 points while Gaines registered eight rebounds. For the Lancers, Smith generated more than half the offense with 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting and two made treys.

The home team came out firing in the second half, scoring the first eight points to take a 42-35 lead. Baker came alive for the Lady Camels scoring 10 points in a five-minute stretch to knot the contest at 50 with 12:51 left.

Two huge threes by Spry and one from Baker put the Lady Camels back on top, 64-55, with 8:22 left. The back and forth game continued as the Lancers scored 11 of the next 12 points to take the lead, 66-65, with 4:52 left.

From there, neither team led by more than three and the game came down to the final possession.

After Baker recovered a rebound with 46 seconds remaining with the score tied 75-all, Campbell had its chance. As the shot clock was winding down Baker found Presley underneath the basket in traffic, but even with two chances after an offensive rebound, the Lady Camels were denied.

Following a Longwood timeout at 19 seconds, Smith received the ball to the left of the basket and was able to sink a layup with time winding down to secure the Longwood victory.

The Lady Camels are back in action today at Liberty with the tip slated for 2 p.m. Campbell plays its next home contest on Thursday against Winthrop at 7 p.m.
